Goodbye, 20th Century! consists of three stories of extreme violence and emotional despair. Le candidat macédonien pour les nominations à l'Oscar du meilleur film en langue étrangère, The Third Half, s'inspire de faits remontant à la Seconde Guerre mondiale et évoque romance, sport, religion, identité nationale et Holocauste. L'intrigue se passe à Skopje au début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale autour de l'équipe de football de Macédoine, un club trop faible pour la league du Royaume de Yougoslavie. Avant le début du conflit, le directeur de l'équipe, Dimitri, invite le célèbre footballeur juif-allemand Spitz pour entraîner le groupe, composé d'amateurs, et les porter au sommet de la league. Perhan est un rom orphelin. Fils d'un soldat slovène et d'une rom, il est élevé ainsi que sa sœur handicapée Danira par sa grand-mère dans un bidonville de Skopje en Yougoslavie (devenue la Macédoine en 1991). La vie de famille s'organise autour d'un accordéon, d'un dindon et d'un oncle déluré qui, pour soutirer de l'argent à sa sœur, soulève la cabane de celle ci par le toit. Perhan tombe amoureux d'Azra, la fille de la voisine, mais la mère refuse de donner sa fille en mariage car Perhan est pauvre et n'a pas de situation. Toutefois, durant la fête de l'Ederlezi, les deux jeunes gens échangent des promesses.

The film opens with actual news footage of protests in front of American embassy in Belgrade following the Kosovo is Serbia protest rally that was held in response to 17 February 2008 unilateral declaration of independence by ethnic Albanians inhabiting Serbia's southern province of Kosovo. The film takes place in 1914 when William of Wied was enthroned Prince of Albania, and the country was occupied by all the neighbouring countries. Shestan (Blerim Destani), a young idealist villager forms a band and travels the country trying to find enemy troops to fight. During his journeys he comes across many opposing factions like the Ottoman loyalist band of Kus Baba (Çun Lajçi) and meets Agnes (Masiela Lusha), whose father wants her to become a Catholic nun, and falls in love with her. However, Shestan continues his journey and arrives at Prince William's headquarters where he offers his services and asks to fight on the frontline but the prince mocks his willingness to fight. Shestan, while being extremely disappointed decides to return to his village but on the way back home he comes across Agnes who has been kidnapped by "Mad Ahmed", a Muslim extremist and saves her. After arriving home Shestan and Agnes get married but on their wedding day Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir apparent to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, are assassinated in Sarajevo marking the beginning of World War I. When Shestan learns about the beginning of the war, his companions ask him about their future actions and the film ends with Shestan replying to them "Play the music louder".
