Bhookailas (Telugu: భూకైలాస్) is a 1940 Telugu film produced by A. V. Meiyappan and directed by Sundar Rao Nadkarni. The film is starring M. V. Subbaiah Naidu, R. Nagendra Rao. It was the first hit film for the establishment of AVM Productions.
It was adapted from the famous Kannada stage play "Bhookailas" by Sri Sahitya Samrajya Nataka Mandali of Mysore.

There was a Prince in Hindustan named Ashwapati, ruling over the kingdom of Madra. He married Queen Malavi. Even after a longtime they did not have a child. Sati Sulochana is based on the character Sulochana from the Ramayana. She is the wife of Indrajit and the daughter-in-law of Ravana, the demon-king in Ramayana. The film tries to portray the goings on of the war between the Hindu god Rama and Ravana as seen from the point of view of Sulochana. Ravana abducts Rama's wife Sita to his kingdom of Lanka, drawing Rama into a war. In the course of the war, Rama's brother Lakshman is knocked unconscious by an arrow from Indrajit and is revived by a medicinal herb called Sanjeevani. The revived Lakshman kills Indrajit and makes Sulochana a widow. Ravana's defeat by Lord Rama and the killing of Indrajit is viewed through the eyes of Sulochana. Unable to bear the pain of husband's death, Sulochana commits sati sacrifice.

In the film, the poem by Lewis Carroll is read and a wardrobe is shown moving through a forest. The wardrobe contains a strange playroom inside that is watched over by an old man in a portrait. The film switches between images of dolls, toys in a nursery, and paper planes to images of dismembered dolls, maggot-infested vines, and a black cat knocking things over. The ending of the film contains an ink blob escaping from an occurring maze, freeing itself from life's constraints. It then defaces the image of the old man (the authority figure) and flees out of the window.
