The Spendthrift (German:Der Verschwender) is a 1953 Austrian historical film directed by Leopold Hainisch and starring Attila Hörbiger, Josef Meinrad and Maria Andergast. It is an adaptation of Ferdinand Raimund's play of the same name.

The film's sets were designed by the art director Gustav Abel. It was shot in Gevacolor.

Sam et Alex forment un jeune couple modèle. Étudiants et amoureux, ils travaillent dur pour réussir leurs examens et trouver un emploi à la mesure de leurs ambitions. Sitôt son diplôme de médecin en poche, Sam trouve un premier poste à Los Angeles. Les tourtereaux sont forcés de faire leurs bagages et de déménager à Laurel Canyon, où vit déjà Jane, la mère de Sam, une productrice de rock. Un peu coincés financièrement, les jeunes gens acceptent d'être hébergés par Jane. Mais rapidement, la cohabitation entre dans une zone de turbulence : la très sage Alex est attirée par la vie bohème de Jane, qui sort avec le chanteur du groupe qu'elle tente de lancer, un garçon de quinze ans son cadet. Quant à Sam, il rencontre Sara, une collègue de travail au charme incendiaire.

The story follows rich businessman Shravan Dhariwal (Sanjay Dutt). Shravan has everything one can dream of having and what he doesn’t have, he buys it. One day, he meets Varsha (Manisha Koirala) and believes her to be his true love. He proposes to her, and she eventually agrees. The couple get engaged, and go on a small holiday. Heart broken and shattered, Varsha’s whole world collapses around her. She leaves the country and goes as far away as possible from Shravan Dhariwal to start a new life. Shravan goes back home, and says things didn't go well with Varsha.

Vijay (Guru Dutt), un poète, ne parvient pas à vivre de ses vers. On lui conseille d’écrire des poèmes d’amour, d’abandonner les réflexions pessimistes sur la nature humaine qui sont son thème de prédilection. Sa famille ne le soutient pas : ses frères vendent ses manuscrits à une usine de pâte à papier et le chassent de la maison. Vijay tente de racheter ses poèmes, mais le gérant de l’usine lui apprend qu’une femme en a fait l’acquisition. La nuit, alors que Vijay dort sur un banc public, il entend une femme, Gulabo (Waheeda Rehman) chanter un de ses textes. Il la suit, jusqu’à la maison close où elle officie. Lorsqu’elle s’aperçoit que Vijay est sans le sou, elle le chasse. En lisant un papier tombé de la poche du poète, elle réalise qu’il est l’auteur des poèmes qu’elle a achetés.

The only soldier brother (Ayub Khan) of a young woman, Roopa (Twinkle Khanna), returns to Chandanpur village to arrange her marriage. A festival is arranged in the happiness of Roopa's marriage, however Chandanpur's happiness is short-lived, as the village is raided by a group of terrorists. The leader of the terrorists, Gujjar, (Tinu Verma), murders a politician, and to make matters worse, Roopa's beauty catches the eye of Gujjar. However, as Gujjar attempts to escape with the terrified Roopa, her brother comes to her rescue, only to be slain, much to the horror of the village, especially Roopa. Also, her best friend, Gopal (Master Om Kapoor), is killed too, much to the dismay of Gopal's mother (Tanvi Azmi) who tried to prevent her son from rescuing Roopa (Due to his young age) which is what led Gujjar to kill him. Roopa, enraged by the fact that her brother and Gopal are no more, vows vengance. Gujjar threatens Roopa that she will only be his mistress and will never be able to have a brother nor lover. Enraged, Roopa attempts to commit suicide by jumping into a waterfall as she finds it better to kill herself rather than be a mistress. Destiny has other plans as Roopa survives and she steals the clothes of Kishan (Aamir Khan), a theatre actor. Kishan works with his best friend, truck driver, Shankar (Faisal Khan). When Kishan meets Roopa for the first time, he is smitten by her beauty and falls in love with her. Kishan decides to make Roopa the heroine of their dance show, however, Shankar warns him that Roopa will bring them in trouble. With no option, Roopa travels with them, and she tries to escape, but returns when chased by the gang and a drunk who tries to rape her. However, Roopa is saved by Shankar and Kishan. Roopa feigns love for Kishan, who wants to marry her, and the two men agree to help her return to Chandanpur. When Kishan is going to marry Roopa, who feels guilty over her betrayal, led, she tells them her story. Shankar becomes her brother, while Kishan, heartbroken, leaves in disgust. Roopa and Shankar return to Chandanpur, where Shankar mobilises the village, attempting to set a trap for Gujjar who has learnt of Roopa's survival and terrorizes the village to find out her whereabouts. The trap backfires horribly until Kishan returns with a suspended cop Pakkad Singh (Johny Lever). The trap is re-set with another carnival and the villains' attack as planned. Roopa is kidnapped and Kishan and Shankar give chase and are captured and taken to Gujjar's hideout where they are forced to fight him and his men. Eventually with the arrival of Chandanpur's villagers, good prevails and the terrorists meet a glory end. Roopa is united with her brother Shankar and her lover Kishan.
