The story begins with Kushboo a Ghazal Singer who visits a hill station to try and forget the murder of her mother who was very close to her. She meets Mukesh who is a taxi driver. Nizhalgal RaviGautam (Venu Arvind) is unemployed and when all his efforts in securing a job fail miserably, his friend recommends him for a job with a large business magnate. The catch is that in order to get the job, Gautam must marry the boss' dark-complexioned daughter. Against his better judgement, he marries her, but her lack of beauty makes him cringe. As fate would have it, he falls in love with a beautiful ghazal singer. Soon thereafter, his wife dies in an accident. The coast now being clear, Gautam happily marries the ghazal singer. However, his happiness is short-lived as he soon realizes that he now has two fathers-in-law. Life becomes miserable for Gautam with both his fathers-in-law enforcing their influence and their crazy ideas to his everyday life. Gautam laments that one can afford to have two living wives, but not two living fathers-in-law. To make matters worse, Gautam's first wife returns as a spirit. With the constant appearance of the first wife's spirit, visible only to Gautam, events take a more uproarious turn. A series of mind-boggling comic interludes develop and utter confusion reins amidst the family members.

Gopinath (Gemini Ganesan) falls in love with Janaki (Sowcar Janaki) and they get married in Kasi. The marriage is not accepted by Gopinath's mother and the couple gets separated. Janaki is pregnant and her father (V. S. Raghavan), realizing that no man will marry Janaki a second time, decides to make her a collector. Gopinath meanwhile had moved to South India, where he later married Jaya (Jayanthi) by hiding his previous marriage. They live a happy life with their three children and Jaya's father. Gopinath works as a clerk in the collector's office. A new collector arrives at the office, and it turns out to be Janaki. They tend to work together and Nagesh spreads a rumour across stating that there is an affair between Janaki and Gopinath. This rumour reaches Jaya and she is completely disturbed. Jaya discovers the secret of Gopinath's affair with Janaki. Meanwhile the sons of both Janaki and Jaya, Ramu and Prabhakar drowned in water and have been admitted to Hospital. Somehow Jaya manages the disturbance of the secret and accepts Janaki as her sister. But Ramu dies in hospital while Prabhakar survives. Jaya gives Janaki her son as a gift. Janaki and Prabhakar leave for abroad as Janaki got her duty abroad.
