Thenmozhi (Sarita), a worker in a textile factory, resides in a small village with her blind father, a former freedom fighter. She develops a mutual attraction to Ulaganathan (Rajesh), an idealist in the same village who is respected for his integrity and unselfishness. Raja (Prashanth), Sudhakar (Charle), Raghava (Chinni Jayanth), Marudhu (Vadivelu) are good friends stay together as tenants at (Gandhimathi), after being thrown out of the house they start searching for a new house on rent but no one is willing to give their house for bachelors. Finally they come to know a landlady (K. R. Vijaya) in search of a family as her tenants. A plot is hatched by and all the four bachelors dress up to be a family man (Charle), his retarded brother (Chinni Jayanth), his uncle (Vadivelu) & his wife Lakshmi (Prashanth being the wife). Now Prashanth's (who happens to be in a woman's attire) lady love (Suneha - debut) happens to be the landlady's daughter. At one point of time by mistake the friends inform the landlady that Lakshmi is pregnant, the landlady arrange for valaikappu function, followed by a Doctor (Vaishnavi) checkup, burst into a series of rumbled conflicts & all hell breaks loose.

The basic story of the movie involves Laila and Suriya falling in love. A 3rd character gets entangled in the plot and Laila is compelled by her family to marry him. Heart-broken Suriya leaves her alone, but only to find out that the man she is engaged to marry is a total crook. In trying to prove this to Laila, Suriya always ends up in situations where he looks like the crook. Infuriated and disgusted Laila yells at Suriya telling him to back off. Suriya then officially leaves her alone. Sneha gets weaved into the plot and ends up falling for Suriya's charm, and fastidious behaviour and they end up having great times together, that is until Laila comes back all heart-broken after finding out her boyfriend wants nothing further to do with her as he was going to marry someone else. Upon seeing this Suriya becomes greatly disturbed and helps Laila out in all the ways he can. In the end Laila is moving back to her hometown and at the train station asks for Suriya's hand in marriage, only to find that he is not interested. He states that love isn't like a tape-recorder to play over and over again, it only comes once. He tells her he is now only interested in Sneha who will wait for him all her life. He sees her off and is leaving the train station when Sneha runs up to him. They both smile at each other and walk off into the sun set.

Sethu (Kamal Haasan) and Ranjani (Rekha) arrive at a cliff where they plan to commit suicide due to the pressure put up by Ranjani's parents against their marriage. Sethu who is the son of an ordinary drunkard cook (Delhi Ganesh) and is also a dancer is not accepted as groom for Ranjani by her parents. The parents threaten Ranjani that either they would kill Sethu or commit suicide. While jumping from the cliff Sethu accidentally gets trapped in a tree and escapes but Ranjani dies. Despite the attempts made by Ranjani's father to jail Sethu by framing a fault case that Sethu killed Ranjani, no strong evidence was there to prove it. He is jailed for the offence of attempted suicide for one year.

Anirudhan who belongs to a middleclass family is a sales manager of a private firm. His family comprises his father, grandmother and a sister; a typical shy village girl. One day as part of Anirudhcan’s job matters he moves to a lodge in town. There he meets a group of people that includes bachelors who work like him in small firms, a middle-aged helper and the owner of the lodge. Soon Anirudhan befriends everybody and comes to know about a special character named Sukumaran who also stays there. Sukumaran is a city-bred person yet he easily makes friends with Anirudhan. Two of them had a very short accidental acquaintance earlier which makes them easier to be friends. One day a young girl comes to the place and asks to meet Sukumaran. Anirudhan and one of his friends assume that she might be the girlfriend of Sukumaran. Later they make fun of Sukumaran and thinks that he hides something from them. Some days later the same girl arrives there again. From the appearance of Anirudhan the girl mistakes him for a servant. To their surprise Sukumaran announces that she is her only sister not any girlfriend the way they think. They go with their daily routines when a telegraph arrives with the news that Anirudhan’s grandmother is ill. Anirudhan decides to leave for home at the earliest. Sukumaran also joins him. At home he finds his grandmother got injured from a small fall but nothing to worry. He introduces his friend Sukumaran to the family. Sukumaran behaves easily like one of their family members. Anirudhan’s sister Sujatha gradually likes his character and she is drawn to him. After Sukumaran’s return from Anirudhan’s home he tells he is in love with Sujatha to their roommate Ravi. Ravi arranges a meeting with Anirudhan and it becomes a marriage proposal. Anirudhan, finding no problem with the alliance agrees to the same and his sister Sujatha also. In between this Sukumaran comes with a proposal of his sister for Anirudhan. Marriages of the two friends with their sisters take place soon. In the initial time after marriage Anirudhan experiences small amounts of classism & cultural shock from Neelima in terms of usage of contraceptive pills and her discomfort to be in a typical village house. His sister Sujatha also experiences similar experiences from Sukumaran from his urban model lifestyle. To Sukumaran and Neelima the new environment and their partners’ styles are not that challenging, at least for the time being.
