Kamla Ki Maut (Death of Kamla) is a 1989 Hindi drama film directed by Basu Chatterjee. The film set in Mumbai, deals with issue of love, pre-marital sex and relationships in modern India. It stars Pankaj Kapoor, Supriya Pathak and Roopa Ganguly in lead roles.

At the 36th Filmfare Awards the film won the Filmfare Award for Best Screenplay for Basu Chatterjee. In 2013, to commemorate 100 years of Indian cinema, National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC) in partnership with Shemaroo, released a digitally re-mastered print of the film under "Cinemas of India" label.

Synopsis

The film is set in a lower middle class chawl, an apartment building in Mumbai, a 20-year-old and unmarried Kamla, unable to handle the news of her pregnancy commits suicide. This makes her neighbourhood examine their own secrets and the choices they have made in their own lives.

The story begins in a courtroom where a teenage boy from a city slum is on trial for stabbing his father to death. Final closing arguments have been presented, and the judge then instructs the jury to decide whether the boy is guilty of murder. The judge further informs them that a guilty verdict will be accompanied by a mandatory death sentence. The twelve-man jury retires to a private room, where they spend a short while getting acquainted before they begin deliberating. It is immediately apparent that the jurors have already decided that the boy is guilty, and that they plan to return their verdict quickly, without taking time for discussion – with the sole exception of Juror Number 8 (K.K. Raina). His is the only "not guilty" vote in a preliminary tally. He explains that there is too much at stake for him to go along with the verdict without at least talking about it first. His vote annoys the other jurors, particularly Juror 7 (M. K. Raina), who has tickets to Dilip Kumar's movie Mashal.

Rosie Perreira (Pearl Padamsee) is an overly anxious widow, living with her violin-obsessed son, Shabi (Ranjit Chowdhry) and a lovely daughter, Nancy (Tina Munim) who she would like to get married to a wealthy young man. Her brother and neighbour, Tom (David) introduces a young eligible Tony Braganza (Amol Palekar) to Nancy in the 9:10 AM Western Railway local train from Bandra to Churchgate. Rosie is initially apprehensive about him as he only drawing a mere Rs.300/ compared to Nancy's Rs.700/-, but soon changes her mind when she finds out that after his probationary period he will draw a monthly pay of Rs.1000/-. Nancy and Tony are permitted to meet and both eventually fall in love. While Nancy has a past where she was betrayed by a boy whom she loved,she still likes Tony. Tony is hesitant, and this is what costs him Nancy's love, as Rosie feels that he will not come through with the marriage. And soon Rosie starts looking elsewhere for a son-in-law. Nancy does not like this but she at first accepts whatever her mom wants.Nancy and Tony have a fight and stop meeting each other in the train as well. When Tom comes to know about this he speaks to Tony's dad. Tony's dad tells tony that if he is still reluctant to make any commitments, he should tell Nancy about the same. So Nancy and Tony meet each other and Nancy tells him that she will never meet him again. It is then that Tony feels that he actually loves Nancy and cannot live without her. Then Nancy also confesses her love for him and they get married happily.

The story of the movie starts with a young man Amitabh having big dreams. He falls for a rich girl Moushumi. She falls for him as well. He pretends to be rich not to disappoint her and takes help from his friend for a suit, the car and the flat claiming all his own. He wants to start a galvanometer business by buying old ones and refurbishing them to workable ones with the help of A.K. Hangal. Unfortunately the big cats try to buy him out but Amitabh doesn't budge. So, they buy A.k. Hangal by bribing him with money for his daughters wedding. This leads to a big failure for Amitabh whose mother Lalita Pawar has to give the insurance money to her son to bail him. It still doesn't work and Amitabh is taken to court by Moushumi's father, a lawyer. Lalita Pawar encourages her son to repair the galvanometers himself and when he falls short of money, sells her gold jewellery. The prosecutor withdraws the case as the galvanometers are now repaired. His friend Prakash Mariwalla also helps him with ten thousand rupees in disguise of an order.
