Kanyadanam is a 1998 Telugu film starring Upendra, Srikanth and Rachana in the lead roles, directed by E. V. V. Satyanarayana and produced by Ambica Krishna. The film's music was composed by Koti. The film released on 10 July 1998 across Andhra Pradesh. Kanyadanam was Upendra's debut movie in Telugu. The film explored the soft and romantic side of Upendra, who had gained a much dreaded image after his psychopath performance in his earlier Kannada Telugu blockbuster A.

Synopsis

The movie revolves around a couple of bachelors (Srikanth, Upendra, Shivaji, Rajeev Kanakala) who come into the city to find work. Upendra and Rachana fall for each other at their first encounter.But Later Rachana gets married to Srikanth. After Srikanth comes to know that her wife is in love with somebody else, he decides to sacrifice her to him. After she leaves her in the home town of her boy friend, Upendra takes her back to his friend Srikanth's home to provide temporary shelter for her. Later, Srikanth comes to know that his wife has actually loved Upendra before, he arranges a remarriage for both of them. The movie has got good blend of comedy scenes with Brahmanandam, situational back ground score and nice story line.The movie has depicted the lover boy role of Upendra despite his eccentric image.

The story is set in the backdrop of rural India. Thakur Bhanupratap Singh (Amitabh Bachchan) is the head of the “Sooryavansh” ancestry in the village of Bharatpur where he is also the distinguished Sarpanch of the local Gram panchayat. The people of Bharatpur reckon Thakur Bhanupratap with great honour and respect for his blue blood and virtuous ideologies. Thakur Bhanupratap has three sons – the youngest among whom is Heera (Amitabh Bachchan, in a dual role). Thakur Bhanupratap considers Heera good-for-nothing and avoids any kind of verbal or physical communication with him because of Heera being illiterate. Appa Rao (Rajendra Prasad) is a bachelor who manages every day by living off the loans he takes from others. He manages to coerce the local MLA Nadendla Anjaiah (Babu Mohan) into promising for repaying his debts in exchange for the votes in Anjaiah's favor from the debtors of Appa Rao. One night, he meets a lady constable Subba Lakshmi (Shobana) who slaps him for trying to protect some rowdies who tried to molest her. They meet again and spar with each other, this time over a lottery ticket for Rs. 10 lakhs, and end up tearing the ticket. The seller (Ali) refuses to take it back instead advises them to keep the two halves with them so that if they win the lottery they could share the prize money. As luck would have it, their ticket wins the lottery and Appa Rao fakes a story about his family troubles to retrieve the other half of the ticket from Subba Lakshmi. Though aware of the pretense of Appa Rao, she donates the other half as she comes to know that the ticket didn't win the lottery and it was mistakenly printed in the newspaper earlier. Appa Rao later realises the same and confronts her, but she tells him that she sacrificed her ticket as she believed his story. As a result, Appa Rao falls in love with her and overcome by emotion, tries to kiss her, but she slaps him for the second time. Subba Lakshmi also falls in love with Appa Rao.

Surya (Aryan Rajesh) is a man who hates love. But somehow he is charmed by Brinda (Anita Hassanandani). Brinda likes his attitude and admires him as a friend. But her admiration coupled with a few coincidences makes Surya think that she is in love him. When he is expecting her to spell those magical words (I love you), she introduces Surya to her fiancee (Sai Kiran). After Brinda weds her beau, a damsel (Bhoomika Chawla) meets Surya and explains the flashback. That beautiful girl is a silent admirer of Surya and had been following him for years. She proposes to Surya when they were in college. Surya asks her to come back once he is financially settled, as love and life after needs security. Finally Surya settles for her and movie ends on a happy note.
