Varsha has been brought up in an orthodox Hindu family, and has been taught to treat her husband as her God. When she marries influential politician, Bittu Singh, she decides to be the ideal Hindu wife and becomes his shadow, bowing down to his every command. When the time for election comes, Bittu prepares himself for an election in which he may become the Chief Minister of the State, while a pregnant Varsha prepares herself for mother-hood. When Bittu asks Varsha to accompany him to one of his speeches, she agrees to do so. On the way there they are attacked, their driver is killed, Bittu and Varsha are assaulted, and as a result loses her child. Bittu wins the elections and becomes the State's new Chief Minister, leaving Varsha in hospital to deal with her loss and mental agony. When Varsha recovers, she returns to Bittu, who now resides in a palatial home, and once she settles down, she demands that he bring their assailants to justice. A man named Shiva is arrested, he confesses, and is sentenced to several years in jail. Then Varsha meets with a young journalist named Sanjay, and it is this meeting that will change her life and her way of thinking forever, as well as bring her face to face with the very people who were responsible for the loss of her child.

The film opens as Jai Singh Adenwaala (Naseeruddin Shah) gets into an accident due to drunk driving but is saved from death by Subhash Sharma (Paresh Rawal). As Jai Singh is seriously drunk, Subhash hails a taxi and decides to drop him home. Once at the Adenwaala Bunglow, Jai Singh invites Subhash inside to thank him. He introduces him to his wife, Malika (Neha Dhupia) a glamorous but shady young lady and his lawyer and friend, AD Merchant (Boman Irani). He then ends up hiring Subhash as his chauffeur, much to the chagrin of Malika. Merchant also develops a dislike for him . Malika tries her best to get Subhash out of the house but Subhash's cleverness and quick wit saves him every time.

Neha is the only daughter of wealthy and widowed Mr. Khanna, and he would like to see her married and well settled before he passes on. À la suite du décès de son mari, Sharda (Priya Tendulkar) épouse le gouverneur Jaisingh Sinha (Raj Babbar). Son fils aîné, Sahil (Bobby Deol) ne l'apprécie pas. Lors d'un anniversaire il menace son beau-père avec un couteau devant tous les invités. Le lendemain, il découvre son père tué par la même arme et il est arrêté sur le lieu du crime. Au tribunal, tous les proches de son père, le médecin de famille, l'avocat et même sa propre mère témoignent contre lui ; il est déclaré coupable et est condamné à 14 ans de prison. Quelques jours après son arrivée en prison, il s'évade et une chasse à l'homme est organisée, dirigée par l'inspecteur Udham Singh (Om Puri). Toutes les personnes qui avaient témoigné contre lui sont hospitalisées les unes après les autres et le docteur Gandhi (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) est assassiné. Tout en incitant Mantri (Prem Chopra) à lui avouer la vérité, Sahil apprend qu'Udham Singh croit avoir arrêté le véritable assassin et obtenu ses aveux. Peu après, Sahil retourne chez lui et sa mère le pardonne. Mais le cauchemar reprend quand Udham Singh est poignardé et personne ne connaît alors l'identité du vrai tueur.
