Synopsis
Belonging to a family that has a grandfather addicted to alcohol, Mohan Khanna (Raj Kapoor) too is addicted to alcohol, compounded by the fact that he is enamoured with a woman, Miss Reeta (Nishi), who is using him to extort money and vengeance from his Judge father, Kundan Lal Khanna. The only person who is really interested in the welfare of Mohan, in a practical way, is an aged and recently hired servant of the family, who has just been released from prison for killing two people.Acteurs

Judge Raghunath is a wealthy district judge who convicts Jagga, a man whose father was a criminal, of rape on little evidence. The judge believes that "good people are born to good people, and criminals are born to criminals." Jagga later escapes and kidnaps the judge's wife Leela for revenge. When he finds out that she has just become pregnant, he releases her after four days and plans a different kind of revenge. The judge suspects that Leela was unfaithful to him with Jagga, and throws her out of the house.

The central character is the Post Master who is given a mysterious cheque for ₹500,000 to be given to anyone who will use it to benefit the people of the village. There is a postman who pretends to be lame and is secretly rich and may have sent the cheque. Then there is the postmaster's wife, who is sick and would rather use the money to cure her illness, and his beautiful daughter Seema (played by Sadhana), who has a crush on the village school master. Meanwhile all the greedy and influential people of the village are busy trying to convince everybody why they are most deserving of the money; they include the village priest, the land lord, the money lender, the village doctor and the school master, who is by far the most respected. They all decide democracy is the best means and decide to hold an election where the winner gets the money. The movie is a satirical look at democracy through various twists and turns in the plot, interweaved with a simple love story.

Chanderbabu (Nazir Hussain), a retired postmaster, lives in the village with his wife and two sons, Rajan (Paul Mahendra) and Bhanu (Bharat Bhushan). À la suite du décès de leurs parents, Muskaan (Kajol) et son frère Vishal (Arbaaz Khan) ont été élevés à la campagne par leur oncle et leur tante. Muskaan est aujourd’hui une charmante jeune fille qui souhaite aller étudier à Mumbai. Malgré ses craintes de voir sa sœur perdue dans cette grande ville, son frère accepte et l'accompagne jusqu’à son université où il rencontre le président (Tiku Talsania) pour s’assurer du sérieux de l’établissement et du bien-être de Muskaan. Celle-ci reçoit de nombreuses propositions de mariage de bonnes familles mais Vishal les rejette toutes les unes après les autres. Il fait subir à chaque prétendant un test : le tour de sa propriété à cheval mais qui tourne au drame à chaque fois… Seul celui qui réussira le test pourra épouser Muskaan. Lorsque cette dernière tombe amoureuse de Suraj Khanna (Salman Khan) rencontré à l’université, elle le présente à sa famille et Vishaal le soumet à son test mais Suraj échoue. Vishaal veut alors que Muskaan épouse le frère de Thakur Vijay Singh (Aashif Sheikh) sans savoir que Thakur Vijay Singh (Nirmal Pandey) ne souhaite cette union que dans le but de se venger de la famille de Muskaan pour un différend que les deux familles avaient eu il y a longtemps.
