Azhagappan (Vadivelu) is a member of a theatre group. One fine day an unlikely visitor from the heavens stumbles upon him and almost falls for him. The beautiful trio of the heaven – Ramba, Thilothama, and Urvashi – comes to the earth to enjoy its “beauty”. While the others get back to where they belong to at the right time, Ramba (plays by Suja) loses her track and gets into trouble. Vadivelu accidentally helps her to go back to the heaven. She gets him to the heaven during the night and sends him back to the earth early in the morning.

Thavasi (Vijaykanth) is an influential, do-good landlord in a small village, who commands respect from village. Thavasi and his wife (Jayasudha) arrange for the marriage of their son Boopathi (Vijaykanth) with Priyadarshini/Priya (Soundarya). Sankarapandi (Nassar) who had killed Thavasi's sister, after marrying her wants to marry his daughter (whom he had with his second wife) to Boopathi. Thanagarasu who is accused of stealing jewels commits suicide. Thangarasu's mother questions Thavasi's judgement. Thavasi decides to send Bhoopathi to his home. Maragathammal hates Boopathi and treats him like a dirt though Boopathi tolerates it. Sankarapandi wants his daughter to wed Bhoopathi. Boopathi unknown to Maragathammal saves Thanagarasu's dumb sister from Kottaiperumal and also reforms Kaarmegam which Karmegam reveals to Maragathammal in Boopathi's marriage. In the end, a goon who was supposed to be dumb blurts out the truth that Sankarapandi was responsible for the temple theft and he murdered Thanagarasu and made it to look like suicide. In the end, Bhoopathi unites with Priyadarshini.

Karuthayya and Peter (Murali - Manoj) are the best of friends, sharing with each other their hopes and dreams. Karuthayya's plan, to get his beloved sister Kayal (Uma) married elsewhere, is thwarted when he learns that Kayal is in love with Peter. He hears this from Uppili (Pratyksha) who has a soft corner for Karuthayya and vice versa. For his sister's sake, Karuthayya approaches Peter with the marriage proposal. A shocked Peter, who had all along shared an easy relationship with Uma, consents for the sake of friendship. Peter then makes a counter proposal - that Karuthayya marry his sister Maria. Peter however withholds the fact that Maria had been seduced by a man from the city and was carrying his child. Family honour being uppermost in his mind, friendship takes a back seat. But Peter does not know that Karuthayya was already aware of his sister's affair, though not of her pregnancy. Karuthayya knowing his friend's aggressive nature had not told Peter about the matter earlier. Karuthayya now throws the ball back in Peter's court, asking him to first get Maria's consent. Sure that Maria would not give her consent for the marriage. But to his shock Maria agrees.

Saktivelu (Kamal Haasan) returns home to his father, Periya Thevar’s (Sivaji Ganesan) village in Tamil Nadu, after completing his education in London. Much to his father’s annoyance, he brings his westernized girlfriend (Gautami) with him to meet his family. Sekhar (Murali) and Muthuraman (Parthiban) live in two different villages. However, they have two things in common: both the families (of Murali and Parthiban) are neck-deep in poverty and they want to send their eldest family member to Dubai to earn good amount of money for their families. Both Muthuraman and Sekhar along with many dreaming to go to Dubai give money to a middleman to buy them passports and visas. Everyone goes to the Chennai airport only to find that they were duped by the middleman. Sekhar and Muthuraman prefer not to go home as their loved ones might be heart-broken to know the fact. Hence, both of them agree that while Muthuraman goes to Sekhar's house saying that he was sent by Sekhar and vice versa. Back at home, an educated Muthuraman finds that though Sekhar's family land is unfit for agriculture; it can be used for grazing of cows. Hence Muthuraman manages to secure a loan with the help of Sudalai (Vadivelu) to buy a couple of cows and help the family earn a big profit; while Sekhar finds that Valli, Muthuraman's wife (Meena), is good at cooking and he suggests her to start a business in cooking. In this way, both families succeed in their efforts. Before the climax, Valli was pregnant and admitted to a hospital in Coimbatore and Sekhar asks Muthuraman to go there. At the right time, Pazhani (Charle), one of the persons who was cheated by the middleman, finds that the cheat has come into Coimbatore too in another disguise and he informs this to Muthuraman and Sekhar when he finds them. In order to prevent any more people to be fleeced by the middleman, the duo set out to bash him. At the right time; the police arrives and he promises them that the cheated men will be given passports and visas to Dubai. However; Muthuraman and Sekhar say that they do not want to go to Dubai or any other country as they became prosperous in their motherland due to their self-confidence.

The film deals with the social stigma associated with a handicapped girl in a rural milieu. Murali is a potter by profession. He has a sister, who is born dumb. Murali has to struggle a lot as the handicraft industry is a dying industry and a good amount of money is taken away by his father (Manivannan), who is a drunkard and a gambler. But, he tries to hide his sorrows by having fun with his sister and servant (Vadivelu), who is also his trusted friend. He is in love with his neighbour (Meena), a weaver. He wants to get his sister married to a noble man. But many reject her as she is dumb. Finally, one man agrees to marry his sister but on condition that Murali must offer dowry. Murali then sells many things dearer to him to get money for the dowry. But, that money is taken away by his father and the marriage falls through. Yet Vadivelu offers to marry his sister without asking dowry and Murali goes home along with Vadivelu to convey this happy news to his sister. But it was too late as the sister commits suicide. Murali as a penance decides to marry a handicapped girl.
