Dilip Roy (Rajesh Khanna) was a painter and married to a rich woman, Sushma . One day while he was passionately painting, his wife comes and asks him to come out with her. He rejects and in ensuring fight she destroys his painting. Dilip gets emotionally upset and throws her away saying that he would kill her and leaves the house. When he comes back, his wife was dead and police arrest him as prime suspect on testimony given by Renu (Bindu), his wife's sister who lives along with them. An eye doctor named Jyoti (Tanuja) arrives in Bombay from London. Gifted painter and playboy Prakash (Rajesh Khanna) falls in love with her, but his past creates problems for him. Princess Kamini (Helen) turns up at Prakash's house drunk and whilst trying to flirt with him, Jyoti arrives and finds them together, storming off. She rejects his attempts to reconcile initially, including his feigning a drug overdose of poison and getting her to arrive and circling her car. Their differences are eventually resolved and he proposes to marry her. Jyoti's father visits Prakash with a bribe and is disgusted with his paintings of the female form and rejection of him. However, after seeing Prakash's religious demonstration, her father apologizes and they start planning the wedding.

Gaurishankar Srivastav (Sunder Purohit) lives with his wife Savitri (Nirupa Roy) and two sons Vikas (Sujit Kumar) and Ravi (Jeetendra). Vikas gets married to wealthy Nanda (Bindu) while Ravi continues his education in college. Ravi is attracted to Usha (Sulakshana Pandit) and hopes to marry her. Gaurishankar is nearing retirement while Vikas is unable to get employment. When Vikas get an offer, he must deposit ₹ 5000. Nanda borrows this money from her uncle and Vikas gets the job. Unaware of the fact, Gaurishankar who works as Cashier in a small firm, steals Rs.5000/- to provide money for his son, but is followed by the watchman. On his way to home, Ravi returning from a Tamasha catches the thief, but is shocked to find his father as thief. To save him from the punishment, he takes the blame on himself. Later Police arrests Ravi for stealing ₹ 5000 from his employer, which shocks his father. The Court finds him guilty and sentences imprisonment for 3 months. Gaurishankar passes away after hearing this, but before death he informs his wife who the real thief was. Savitri is unabel to reveal this fact to anybody. When Ravi completes his sentence, returns home and finds that Usha is getting married to Rakesh (Rakesh Roshan), Dinanath's son. He re-locates to Bombay, gets a job, earns well and sends money to his mother which actually does not reach the right hands as the middle lady Bindu manages to get the money by making false thumb impression. The turn of events after Usha meets Ravi again is the rest of the story when every fact is made open to everybody. The story is scene by scene based on old Bollywood family drama 'maa' starring bharat bhushan and mala sinha.

Thakur Jaswant Singh rules over the region with an iron hand. He has no pity or empathy for the poor, all he is interested in is their money, their women, and alcohol. After the passing away of his dad, he assumes total control over the region, and increases the taxes. One day while walking across the hallway, he trips over the wet floor, and falls down. He gets up angrily and assaults the old woman, Ramvati, who was washing the floor. His abuse is interrupted by the arrival of Ramvati's son, Jeeva, who intervenes. Jaswant is ready to shoot him down, but Jaswant's mom prevents him from doing so. Word gets around that Jeeva is in the bad books of the Thakur, and soon a number of people start conspiring against Jeeva. The next day Jeeva is summoned before the village council and asked to explain his involvement in the death of a cow. Jeeva has no satisfactory explanation, and he is asked to leave the village immediately with his mother. Jeeva refuses to do so, and is severely beaten, and thrown out. Shortly thereafter his mother passes away, and Jeeva decides to avenge her death by bringing about the downfall of Jaswant Singh. In order to do this, he becomes a dacoit. Jeeva swears on the holy river Ganga to wipe out Jaswant Singh and his men, without knowing his decision will bring him into conflict with the police, and with the honest people from the very community he was exiled from.

Dr. Sunil Gupta (Sanjeev Kumar) lives a wealthy lifestyle with his wife, Aarti (Raakhee). After several years of marriage the couple still struggle to bring a child to the world. Aarti decides to take a break and visits their Khandala bungalow, which is near her sister Vidya's (Bindu) house, where she lives with her husband (Sujit Kumar) and their son Raju. Aarti's bungalow is being decorated by Vinod (Shashi Kapoor), who was hired by Vidya and whom she remembers as a fellow from college, both spend considerable time together. Knowing that Aarti is basically alone, Vinod tries to pursue her. After an intense scuffle, Aarti accidentally kills him. Vidya assists Aarti in disposing off his body. However, a few days later, Sunil comes to Khandala and brings home a man who claims that he has lost his memory. The man is none other than Vinod - and Sunil's diagnosis indicates a gradual recovery for Vinod at the end of which he will regain his memory. The story deepens as Vidya and Aarti try to prevent this from happening.

Police inspector Anand is very honest, he is known for his honesty, diligence and bravery. He single handedly captures and arrests notorious smuggler and criminal Jack Ranjit, who is sentenced to several years of jail. Anand Vinod Khanna in disguise, also captures gangster Gulkhan Amjad Khan, who is also sentenced to a long term in jail. Anand's wife Rekha is not very honest and trustworthy and has an affair with another man named Somesh. There are a lot of fights and arguments between husband and wife and Anand threatens to kill her. He starts following his wife hoping to catch her and Somesh redhanded. Shortly after that Rekha and Somesh are found dead and Anand is arrested for their murder though he has not killed them. To prove his innocence and to find the real murderers he escapes from jail and surprisingly comes back face to face with his foes. Ultimately he is proved innocent and the real murderer is arrested.
