The film stars Vyjayanthimala, Ashok Kumar and Manoj Kumar in the lead with Nirupa Roy, Lalita Pawar, Mehmood, Shubha Khote, Mukri and Kanhaiyalal appearing in other significant roles. Music by Adi Narayana Rao was one of the plus point of this film. The song 'Aa bhi ja rasiya' is very melodious. This movie was based on Gulshan Nanda's famous novel of the same name.
The film was produced by South Indian actress Anjali Devi and her husband P. Adinarayana Rao with their production company, Anjali Pictures. Phoolon Ki Sej is about a love between Nirmal Verma and Karuna.
Synopsis
Nirmal Verma and Karuna are attracted to each other, while the former is touring that part of the country. They get very intimate, he promises to return, and even leaves his address with her but she misplaces it. Both do meet after 5 years, and after formal introductions - get married; and she re-locates to live with him and his doctor brother, and Bhabhi, Janki. Shortly thereafter Nirmal and the rest of the family are baffled when they find out Karuna secretly leaves the house and goes to an unknown location - when confronted - she refuses to divulge anything.Acteurs

The movie deals about three friend Amarnath, Gopal and his sister, Mala. As Mala and Gopal's mom is a widow and is unable to care for both the children, she decides to let her Bombay-based cousin, Shobha R. Sharma, adopt Mala. Gopal is always in trouble with the villagers for petty theft, and when he learns that Mala has left, he too runs away from home. Years later, all three have grown up. Mala's mom is deceased, while she continues to live with her aunt and uncle, Public Prosecutor Ramnath Sharma; Amarnath is now an Advocate working with Senior Advocate Mehta, and is in love with Mala, not knowing that she is his childhood friend; while Gopal has been to prison in Poona, Madras, and the Police in Hyderabad want him for questioning. Soon Amarnath will be defending Gopal, alias Ram Singh, for the murder of one Mohanchand - and it will be an uphill task for Amarnath - for not only do the Police have airtight evidence against Gopal, Mohanchand was to be the future son-in-law of Ramnath - who has sworn to bring Gopal to justice by hook or by crook.

Deepak (Bharat Bhushan) lives as a tenant in a small room, owned by his landlord Om Prakash Munshi(Om Prakash). Although he is a poet, he is unable to secure any employment. One day he meets with Jyoti (Vyjayanthimala) and both fall in love. After their marriage, there is considerable resentment, and Jyoti's brother, Shekar (Ashok Kumar) refuses to have to do anything with Jyoti. When Shekar offers money to Deepak, Deepak refuses to accept it. Shekar and Jyoti's dad, Daya Shankar (Badri Prasad) sympathises with Jyoti and wants her to be the sole heir to his property after his death. In the meantime, Om Prakash marries his son to a wealthy woman, who does bring in a lot of dowry, but refuses to do any household work, and instead puts her father-in-law to work. As Deepak is unable to get employment, Jyoti is successful in getting employment as a singer on the local radio station, not knowing that Deepak is resentful of her success, and is thinking of separating from her.

Manish (Deepak Kumar) lives with his brother Anand (Ashok Kumar) an advocate, and sister-in-law Tilottama (Nirupa Roy), in Kashmir. Manish has just returned from abroad having completed his medical degree. Neena (Vimi) has come to Kashmir for her holidays and meets Manish and they fall in love. Manish is waiting to get a job confirmation from one of the hospitals in Bombay. Neena’s sister Sharda (Leela Naidu) lives with her husband Chandrashekhar (Rehman) in Bombay. Mrs. Verma's harassment of Sharda turns to tragedy when two relatives Darwazalal (Jeevan) and Shanta (Shashikala) come to live with them. Nina is also staying in the house with her sister. Darwazalal poison's Sharda who while dying makes Nina promise that she will marry Shekhar. After Sharda dies Nina and a distraught Shekhar get married. Shekhar has no interest in Nina as he is still grieving the loss of his beloved wife Sharda.

The movie was shot in an era when educated people in cities were getting influenced by the western culture hence the people from rural areas who placed a lot of importance to values and culture, strongly abstained from marrying into city people's homes. Geeta is a girl from a well to do family and is well educated, her parents had brought up her with traditional values and respect for those values. After her graduation, her parents decide to marry her off with Ratan Chowdhury, the son of a zaminder, who had the mind frame that a highly educated wife would be incapable of handling and managing a home, specially in a joint family. The film is set in Lucknow, where widower, Nawab Mirza Sultan lives with daughter Zeenat Jahan in an old mansion.
