Seth Bansilal (Mazhar Khan) posing as an ordinary man Govindlal, takes part in a crossword puzzle competition; he wins the second-prize trip to Kashmir. The first prize is won by an unemployed youth, Sumant (Motilal). Bansilal, accompanied by his niece Shashi (Sabita Devi), lands up at a hotel in Kashmir at the same time as Sumant. Due to some misunderstanding Sumant gets the room Bansilal's wife (Sunalini Devi) has booked for him. Bansilal opts to stay in a common cheaper room as Govindlal. Several comic situations follow along with Sumant and Shashi falling in love and Sumant getting black-mailed by a girl in the hotel, Manjri (Khursheed). The misunderstandings are finally cleared with the lovers getting united.

The film starts with a Holi scene, with the people being drenched in colour. Sunder (Ishwarlal) is a poor man who lives with his mother and sister Kokila (Khursheed). Champa (Sitara Devi), an artist, is the daughter of a wealthy Seth (business man). Champa and Sunder meet and fall in love. Chand (Motilal), also from a rich family lusts after Kokila. Sunder is framed by the evil Chand and his father (Keshavrao Date) on a robbery charge and he is caught by the police and put in jail. While he's behind bars his sister is kidnapped by Chand, who wants to marry her. When Sunder is released from jail he is told about his sister being kidnapped. However, love for Kokila has changed Chand from the villainous character and reformed him. He is due to marry Kokila. Suraj, unaware of the change and the impending marriage, rushes in and stabs Chand. Chand is rushed to the hospital. While he's battling for his life, the court procedures begin against Sunder. Finally, Chand turns up in court aided by Champa, to prove he's alive. The film ends on a happy note, with the two pairs of lovers uniting.

Preetam (Guru Dutt), a struggling cartoonist, meets Anita (Madhubala) at a tennis match, where she is watching her favorite tennis star. Anita, a wealthy and westernized heiress is controlled by her feminist aunt, Sita Devi (Lalita Pawar). Sita is suspicious of men, and cultivates her attitudes in Anita. However, to receive her fortune, her father's will decrees that Anita must marry within one month of turning 21. Sita Devi doesn't agree with this, and tries to set Anita up with a sham marriage which will soon lead to divorce, thereby giving her both freedom and a fortune. Sita hires Preetam to marry Anita, but doesn't know that the pair have already met. Preetam is kept from Anita after their marriage, but he kidnaps her and takes her to the traditional house of his brother.
