Poompuhar (Tamil: பூம்புகார்) is a Tamil epic film directed by P. Neelakantan based on one of The Five Great Epics of Tamil Literature Silapadhigaaram in 1964. This is the second movie produced based on Silapadhigaaram epic after the first movie Kannagi in 1942.

SS. Rajendran, C. R. Vijayakumari, Rajasree & K. B. Sundarambal played the lead roles, directed by P. Neelakantan. Song lyrics by Mayavanathan, A. Somu, Mu Karunanidhi, Radha Manickam & Udumalai Narayana Kavi and music by R. Sudarsanam

Synopsis

Kovalan, the son of a wealthy merchant in Kaveripattinam, married Kannagi, the lovely daughter of another merchant. They lived together happily in the city of Kaveripattinam, until Kovalan met the courtesan Madhavi and fell in love with her. In his infatuation, he left his wife Kannagi and gradually spent all his wealth on the dancer. At last, penniless, Kovalan realised his mistake, and returned to Kannagi after a year. Their only asset was a precious pair of anklets (Tamil: Silambu), filled with gems, which she gave to him willingly. With these as their capital they went to the great city of Madurai, where Kovalan hoped to recoup his fortunes by trade.

S.S.Rajendran's (SSR) father dies due to lack of medical assistance. His mother, with great difficulty educates him to be a surgeon. One day, his visit to treat Vijayakumari develops love for each other. Subbaiah, a rich man and father of Vijayakumari, objects to this but finally agrees saying that she must leave his house. After sometime, Vijayakumari begets a child but the child dies in a fire accident. This causes a misunderstanding between SSR-Vijayakumari. SSR feels that his hands cannot perform surgery, any more. He opts for a service with tribals at Senjipuram. There he gets affected by viral fever. What happens from there is the rest of the movie.

But he was agree the wedding and started avoiding her. But Meena was falls love with sekhar. Adopted brother Mohan(R. Muthuraman and a friend Nithyanandham(T. R. Ramachandran try to help of meena holding hand of Sekahar. Sekhar was impressed to her and loves with each other. Meena and Sekhar wedding is arranged. But, during the ceremony another man Gopal(R. S. Manohar) shows up claims to meena to be his wife and she's named as Sumathi. Gopal kept at the evidence for their wedding photo and witness of her father Somasundaram(V. S. Raghavan).
