All round bad guy Bakhtawar (Danny Denzongpa) rules over the docks in Mumbai, treating his workers as slaves and killing anyone who dares to go against his despotic will. The plot is an intricately woven one. It starts from childhood with the story of Ashok (also called Shoki by his childhood friend Vinod) (Dharmendra) who is a wealthy industrialist's only son. He is passionate about cars from childhood befriends Vinod (Vinod Khanna) who is passionate about trains; its his dream to make India's fastest train. Rakesh (Vinod Mehra) shares same passion as Vinod. Randhir (Danny Denzongpa) is in a tussle from childhood to make a better train than Vinod's. Childhood turns into adulthood and one day both attend a dance function organised by the Indian Railways. This is where Ashok and Vinod fall in love with two beautiful women: Seema (Hema Malini) and Sheetal (Parveen Babi). Ashok is now deeply in love with Seema and they are planning to get married after their engagement. Vinod is married to Sheetal and they have a son Raju. One day Vinod, who is now a top notch railway engineer, gets awarded with the contract to build a super-fast express train between New Delhi and Mumbai. Rakesh (Vinod Mehra) is his assistant. Randhir, the losing engineer and ex-lover of Sheetal, swears revenge and leaves.

Ram Kumar (Govinda) lives a wealthy lifestyle in Calcutta with his brother, Prashant (Shatrughan Sinha) and Parvati (Moushumi Chatterjee), his sister-in-law. Since his school-days he had befriended a young orphan named Laxman (Kunal Goswami), who also lives with them. Years later, Ram and Laxman have grown up, and Laxman joins the Police Force. Impressed with Laxman's dedication and diligence, the Police Commissioner assigns him to take down the crime empire of a notorious underworld don called Cobra. Laxman is killed trying to arrest Cobra and Ram swears to avenge Laxman's death, and sets forth to seek Cobra. It is then Ram finds out that the man called Cobra may be Prashant himself. A series of double cross and deceit leads to a plot much more sinister than what Ram could have ever imagined.

During a Buzkashi competition with a neighboring tribe in Afghanistan, Badshah Khan (Amitabh Bachchan) falls in love with Benazir (Sridevi) and wants to marry her. Benazir agrees to marry him on the condition that he must bring her the head of Habib Ullah who killed her father. Badshah Khan goes to India to search for Habibullah. He finds Habibullah in a prison and breaks him out to take him back. He has the jailer Ranveer Singh (Vikram Gokhale) on his trail. In the end he chops off Habibulla's head. He told Ranveer that he would be back in one month to receive punishment (from the Law) for taking Habibulla. Badshah goes back to Afghanistan and marries Benazir; after the time limit he comes back to India and surrenders himself to Rajput Khan and is jailed for five years. While he is away he leaves his childhood friend Khuda Baksh (Danny Denzongpa) to take care of his wife.
