Le docteur Rao (Girish Karnad), un vétérinaire, vient fonder une coopérative laitière dans un village où les producteurs de lait sont en majorité des dalits (intouchables). Il doit faire face à Mishraji (Amrish Puri), qui achète à bas prix le lait de tous les villageois, mais aussi au chef du village (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) qui souhaite utiliser la coopérative naissante pour renforcer son pouvoir. Rao s'aperçoit vite qu'il a besoin du soutien de la population dalit pour réussir son entreprise. Bindu (Smita Patil), une femme de caractère appartenant à cette communauté, sympathise avec lui et accepte d'y participer, entrainant avec elle les autres femmes. Mais Bhola, dont la forte personnalité fait le leader de la communauté, reste sur ses gardes. Sa méfiance s'aggrave lorsqu'il découvre qu'un des associés de Rao a une aventure avec une femme de sa caste. Lorsque Rao finit par convaincre Bhola, l'ensemble du village se rallie à sa cause et des élections sont organisées pour désigner le président de la coopérative. Le vainqueur est un dalit. Mais le chef du village n'accepte pas cette remise en cause de son pouvoir. Il trouve un allié en la personne de Mishraji dont l'entreprise est menacée par le développement de la coopérative. Mishraji parvient à convaincre Bindu, en grande difficulté financière, de prétendre que Rao l'a séduite. Rao et son équipe doivent quitter le village, mais la coopérative ne périclite pas pour autant : les producteurs de lait continuent son œuvre.

The story is set in the colonial period in Assam. The film deals with a young woman who has to give up her university education for her arranged marriage with a rich tea-planter. The plantation and its social routine become a prison of boredom for her since her husband completely neglects her for his business. Things get worse when she discovers, outraged, that her marriage was for the sake of wiping off a huge debt owed by her father. She considers herself as having been sold to her husband. Then one day an old classmate, now an army officer, visits them. Depressed, she gets drawn to her ex-lover from whom she seeks fulfillment.

Pooja (Shabana Azmi), who grew up as an orphan girl and always dreamt of owning a house, becomes insecure when she finds out that she and her husband, Inder (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), have to leave the apartment they rent. The twist that occurred when Inder gives her the keys of a new house proves to be double-edged, when it is revealed that he is in love with another woman, Kavita (Smita Patil), with whom he earned the money (in the film industry) for the new apartment. While previously giving advice to her maid (Rohini Hattangadi) cheated by her husband, now Pooja becomes herself involved in a similar situation. When Inder deserts Pooja for Kavita, she chooses to leave the apartment for a women's hostel with only 7px2000 that she had when she got married. She is helped by Raj (Raj Kiran) to surpass the difficulties of life as a single person, to find a job and to rely morally on herself. Raj and Pooja become good friends. Gradually, Kavita's mental instability deepens her fears of insecurity, even after Inder requests Pooja to sign the divorce papers.

Dharam Das has found an ideal groom for his sister in Din Dayal, who agrees to wed her. However, on the day of the wedding, Din demands an exorbitant amount of dowry, and when Dharam is unable to come up with it, breaks off all ties, returns home, and gets married to another woman. This leaves the Das family completely devastated, the to-be bride kills herself, and the shock of her death kills her father, and Dharam swears to avenge this humiliation at all and any costs. Years later Din has a daughter by the name of Gulab, who is in love with Kamal, the son of Dharam. When Dharam finds out, he is enraged and refuses to permit Kamal to get married to her, but when Kamal insists, Dharam reconsiders and permits the marriage to take place. After the marriage, Gulab is found in the bridal chamber with another man, Ravi; while Kamal is nowhere to be found. The next day Dharam takes Gulab back to Din's house and demands that he be paid 25 Lakhs as dowry. A bewildered Din, who had put all this in the past, is unable to come up with the money, but agrees to keep Gulab with him, get her divorced and re-married to Madan Lal.

Deepak (Jeetendra) is a truckdriver who gives a lift to a famous singer Aasha (Reena Roy) when her vehicle breaks down. They become friends. He is already in love with Mala (Rameshwari), whom he marries. Aasha wishes him well calling him "dost" (friend), even though she has fallen in love with him. Deepak has an accident, and everyone believes that he is dead. His grieving mother tells a pregnant Mala to go away. Mala goes home to her father, but he dies. Upset with everything in her life, she jumps from a bridge into the water. She is saved by members of a temple community but finds that she lost her sight. She gives birth and names her daughter Deepamala, combining her and her husband's names. Her husband turns out to be alive. He comes home and finds his mother overjoyed to see him. She tells him that Mala had committed suicide. He becomes depressed. Aasha re-enters his life and helps him overcome his depression. They get engaged. They become acquainted with Deepamala, now a little girl, selling little God's statutes on the street. They are completely enchanted by her, even though they don't know that she is really Deepak's daughter. Aasha meets Mala and tells her they'll pay for her eye operation, so she can regain her sight. Aasha also invites her and Deepamala to the wedding. After she regains her sight from the operation, she goes to Aasha's wedding and is shocked to see Deepak. She quickly leaves, not wanting to disrupt Aasha and Deepak's lives. Mala's friend (Girish Karnad) tells Deepak that Mala is still alive and that Deepamala is actually his daughter. Aasha cancels the wedding and calls him "dost" (friend) and tells him to go and reunite with his wife and daughter, which he does. Aasha goes back on stage permanently to sing her signature song "Shisha Ho Ya Dil Ho, Aakhir Toot Jata Hai," which translates into "Whether it's glass or a heart, it will inevitably break.

Ravivarman is a talented artist with special ability to draw faces of person at their different ages given their childhood photo. After tragic loss of his wife in Flight blast, he becomes a drunkard and lives aimless. Police summons Ravi to draw the face of accused in bomb blast from the previous file photo. Because of his painting, the criminal George is caught by the police and George challenges to take revenge on Ravi. Chiranjeevi plays a hard nose, honest cop, Inspector Siddanth, who fights for his beliefs. He gets in trouble with the villain (Rami Reddy) when he first refuses his bribe and then protects a witness to his crimes, Shanthi (Juhi Chawla). His guru (J. V. Somayajulu) becomes a minister and stands in the way of the villains. Because Siddanth spoils their assassination attempts and kills one of Rami Reddy's henchmen, Rami Reddy kills Shanthi, Siddanth's wife. In a last attempt to save his guru as well as to prove to him that the other police officers and Reddy were trying to kill him, Siddanth lights the very torch, which is placed with explosives, that his guru was supposed to and dies.
