Bhaskaran(Sreenivasan), the local village goldsmith is in love with Snehalatha(Urvashi), the daughter of P.V.Panicker(Innocent), the local astrologer. They are neighbors. Snehalatha asks for a gold necklace made of 10 pavans (sovereigns) as a symbol of Bhaskaran's love. Bhaskaran makes a necklace and hands it over to Snehalatha. An angry Panicker (her father) finds this out, admonishes her and pockets the golden necklace. He reasons that it was "brotherly love" which made Bhaskaran give the necklace to his daughter.

The movie is about a young Keralite who returns to his home state of Kerala after 7 long years of toil in the Gulf. He now plans to settle in his native town, with whatever savings he managed over the years. The movie traces his plight as he ventures to spend the rest of his life running a bus in a state where employee strikeouts are a common day-to-day event. How he finally has to return to the Gulf losing everything, for another coming (welcome) forms the crux of the movie.

Achuvinte Amma is a movie that tells the deep rooted relation between a mother, Vanaja (Uravashi) and a daughter Achu (Meera Jasmine). Vanaja is a street smart LIC agent who has made it on her own. The movie starts with a loner named Ben Narendran (Mammootty) writing a suicide note. He mentions that he is committing suicide as he has nothing to do with his life.
