Sthreedhanam (English: Dowry) is a 1993 Malayalam family drama film directed by the duo Anil-Babu and starring Jagadeesh, Urvashi and Meenakumari in major roles.

Synopsis

The film is based on Sthreedhanam by C. V. Nirmala. It deals with the problems created by dowry in a middle class Malayali family. This film has also been interpreted in a serial, with the same name.

Thalathil Dineshan (Sreenivasan) is managing a printing press. He is burdened with insecurities about his short physique and dark complexion. His life spirals out of control after his marriage to Shobha (Parvathy). His insecurities are heightened by the fact that his wife is exceptionally beautiful and is taller than him. Initially he is overprotective of his wife, which worsens his relationship with his brother Prakashan(Baiju). He feels challenged by the charm and wit of his brother, which eventually leads to the eruption of a feud in the family. Dineshan gradually resorts to tactics which, he feels, will enable him to earn the respect and admiration of Shobha. He finds a new confidante in Thalakulam Sir (Innocent), who gives him immature advices to win the heart of his wife Shobha. He starts drinking, believing that it is a symbol of machismo. He memorizes jokes from a weekly magazine and monotonously delivers them to his wife, so as to appear witty. But all these attempts turn out to be pure antics and he makes a fool of himself. Shobha, an archetypal Indian wife, is very much devoted to her husband and cannot understand Dineshan's eccentric behaviour. He gradually becomes paranoid and starts suspecting his wife. He threatens the brother (Lalu Alex) of Shobha's friend, whom he suspects of having an affair with her. Things spin out of his control when Shobha learns everything. He is even confined to a mental hospital following some incidents resulting from extreme paranoia, and after a brief treatment he appears to be a changed man. Dineshan wins his wife back from her parental home, assuring her of love and care. Now all seem to be fine with them, but again in the dead of the night when his wife is asleep he starts looking out suspiciously in his backyard for his wife's "secret lover", almost like a Hitchcock ending.

The movie is about a young Keralite who returns to his home state of Kerala after 7 long years of toil in the Gulf. Maharaja Talkies is about Vimala (Urvashi) and her three sisters Ganga, Yamuna and Unnimaya. They run a film theatre that has been bestowed on them by their mother, before she died. Vimala has been more than a father and mother to the younger kids, since their father Raghavan Nair(Babu Namboothiri) had deserted them when they were quite young. Pappachan (Vijayaraghavan) who plays the local moneybag, is hell bent on bringing Maharaja Talkies down. He does it by hiring a cabaret dancer, and the people in no time desert the cinema hall and flock around the voluptuous performer. He also seeks the services of a Panchayath president who has been spurned by the 'theatre sisters' and who was asked to buy a few tickets for his family rather that having them for free. Then Venugopal (Mukesh), Vimala's childhood friend, comes to the village as Panchayath secretary. He then helps Vimala save the talkies.

Jagathy Sreekumar - Kumar Kubera (Kumaran) and Oduvil Unnikrishnan - Prabhakara Prabhu (Prabhakaran)are former friends, business rivals and bitter enemies. They want to outdo each other in everything, and specially when it comes to when marrying off their daughters. Manoharan Salim Kumar the marriage broker brings them many good suitors for their daughters but Kubera and Prabhu succeed in driving away the suitors. One day Manoharan brings a middle easy NRI Kottayam Nazir to see Prabhu's daughter. Nazir works in Oman but Prabhu finds him unsuitable and insults him. Nazir vows to take revenge and marry off Prabhu's daughter to the most unsuitable boy in the land. He enlists Manoharan's help to find such a suitor and Manoharan introduces him to Mattupetti Machan (Mukesh) a notorious coolie in the local market. Kannappan (Baiju) is the rival faction leader and the two often lock horns over unloading work.
