The film stars Dominic Cooper, Emily Browning, Dan Stevens, Hattie Morahan and Nicholas Farrell and focuses on the early 20th century love triangle between British artist Alfred Munnings, his friend Gilbert Evans and Florence Carter-Wood. It was released in the United Kingdom on 14 June 2013.

The film stars Helen Mirren as the philosopher and novelist Ayn Rand, who engages in an affair with a psychologist 25 years her junior by the name of Nathaniel Branden, played by Eric Stoltz. Branden built up an institute to spread Rand's ideas, but the two eventually had a falling out. The Film is about a rich industrialist Adam (Richard E. Grant), who aspires to a more cultured world. The movie opens with Isabella Ford (Embeth Davidtz) in a pathetic state, traveling alone from Selmouth to Addisford on foot although she will be having a baby in a short while. In a deserted cabin on the way, she gives birth to a stillborn baby. She buries it and continues her journey to Addisford. She arrives there late in the evening and meets Ben Wainwright (Tom Bell), the lamplighter at Addisford. He asks her about herself and if she has any relatives in Addisford. Bella replies that she does not have any and she came looking for a man by the name of Arch Wilson (Greg Wise). Ben does not know him and seeing her plight, takes her to his house. She tells his wife (Gemma Jones) to get Bella washed up. Bella, now clean and dry, sits at the dinner table while Ben introduces his family. Ben has three children. Matty (Kenneth Anderson), Con (Ben Chaplin) and Jedd (James Purefoy). Matty, the youngest, is a shoemaker, Jedd is a soldier (cavalry) and Con does not have a specific profession. He does the household chores and helps his parents around. Throughout the movie, Con is shown to be reserved and introvert with a violent temper, although kind at heart. Bella is unable to eat any thing during the dinner, starts crying and faints when she stands up to go to bed.

Le film commence en 62 apr. J.-C. au moment de la répression par la légion romaine d'une révolte de tribus celtes. Un jeune garçon assiste au massacre de son peuple puis à la mort de sa mère, tous tués sur ordre du sénateur romain Corvus (Kiefer Sutherland). Après une ellipse, le récit reprend en 79 dans la province romaine de Bretagne. Un noble romain assiste avec ennui à un combat de gladiateurs, quand son intérêt est ranimé par l'entrée dans l'arène d'un jeune homme sans nom, que la foule surnomme le Celte (Kit Harington), et qui massacre ses ennemis avec une rapidité foudroyante. Le Romain achète le Celte et le fait amener jusqu'à sa ville de résidence, Pompéi. Sur la route, la colonne d'esclaves dont fait partie le Celte est dépassée par la voiture à cheval d'une jeune noble pompéienne, Cassia (Emily Browning), accompagnée de sa servante. La voiture tombe dans une ornière et l'un des chevaux, affolé, se blesse mortellement avec l'une des pièces de son harnarchement. Le Celte offre son aide et, avec l'autorisation de Cassia, achève le cheval pour lui éviter plus de souffrances, avant de reprendre sa place parmi les esclaves.
