The Jazz Age (1929) is a film starring Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Marceline Day, and Joel McCrea in his first leading role. The film, directed by Leslie Shores and written by Randolph Bartlett, was released by RKO Radio Pictures soon after RKO was created from Film Booking Offices of America (FBO), RCA, and the Keith-Albee-Orpheum theater chain.

Synopsis

Steve Maxwell (Fairbanks) and Sue Randall (Day), during an escapade, wreck one of her father's streetcars. Randall uses this incident to stop the elder Maxwell (Walthall) from opposing his illegal contract with the city. When Steve tells all to the city council, Mr. Randall (Ratcliffe) threatens Steve with arrest, Sue admits her culpability, and announces her intentions of marrying Steve.

L'inspecteur Burke de Scotland Yard enquête sur le suicide suspect de Roger Balfour. Dans la demeure du défunt, où s'est déroulé ce fait divers, on trouve : Butler le domestique ; Sir James Hamlin, voisin, héritier et ami du mort ; Arthur Hibbs, le neveu de Hamlin ; et enfin Lucille, fille de Balfour. Burke ne trouve pas d'indice probant et se résout à considérer cette mort comme un suicide. Cinq ans plus tard la demeure Balfour est désormais abandonnée et laissée en ruines. Hamlin vit dans sa propriété, à quelques pas de cette maison, avec son neveu et Lucille, qu'il a adoptée. Pourtant, dans la décrépie demeure Balfour, des lumières mystérieuses apparaissent. Un personnage étrange vient de s'y installer. Il s'agit d'un homme aux cheveux hirsutes, coiffé d'un grotesque chapeau haut-de forme, vêtu d'une grande cape noire et arborant un sourire inquiétant. Il est accompagné d'une pâle jeune femme aux airs perdus et à la mine fantomatique. Peu de temps après, un vieux criminologue vient s'installer chez Hamlin pour enquêter à nouveau sur le suicide de Balfour. Rapidement, tous les habitants de la demeure semblent convaincus que les occupants de la maison abandonnée sont des vampires, des monstres buveurs de sang.

Russ Kane (Warner Baxter) gets a job as a pilot in order to steal cargo. However, after making a forced landing at a "Ghost City" in the desert, he falls in love with Alice Rendon (Billie Dove) and decides to become law-abiding. When her father (George Irving) needs medicine, he flies to get it, but on the way back is chased by ruffians in other airplanes. As a result, Kane's friend, Sandy (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.), parachutes from Kane's plane with the medicine. Meanwhile, escaped prisoners have invaded Alice's home. All is resolved when a sheriff's posse confronts the invaders, Kane destroys the bandit planes, and Sandy becomes a pilot.

Cathleen Gillis (May McAvoy) falls in love with Jack Herrington (Jack Mulhall). Martin Gillis (George Fawcett), Cathleen's loving father, is stern, very religious, and runs an ice cream shop.
