Two battle hardened brothers, one in the Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF) and the other in the Royal Indian Army get ready to face and fight the stubborn Japanese invaders in Burma during World War II while falling in love with the same girl (Mala Sinha). India is in a state of war with Japan and former Colonel Kapoor's sons, Rajan and Ram are both with the Indian Armed Forces. While Rajan is a Wing Commander with the Indian Air Force, Ram is a Major with the Indian Army. Rajan is in love with a doctor named Usha Choudhury, and both plan to get married. Then Usha meets with Ram, who unknowingly falls head over heels in love with her. Before anything can be finalized, Rajan is asked to bomb a secret Japanese airport located in a mountainous valley. While carrying out his duties, he finds out that his mission has been compromised, unable to return, his plane is shot down and he is believed to be dead. The Indian Army wants to destroy this secret airport and sends a crack Commando unit under Major Ram, who sets out to carry out this task. What Ram does not know is that this mission has also been compromised and he and his men are all set to walk into a carefully planned trap by the Japanese - who will ensure that no one survives to tell this story. Ramniklal was a NRI living in Uganda with his son Vijay (Dharmendra) and daughter Radha (Aruna Irani). They are planning to move back to India because of a civil war in the country. The night they were about to move, their home is attacked by rebels and set on fire. Vijay jumps in the fire to save his sister. He carries a woman out, but she turns out to be the housemaid in his sister's clothes (Radha asked the maid to choose the clothes she liked before she left and the maid asked her for the clothes she was wearing). The story revolves around Lucknow-based Nawabzaada Aslam (Raj Babbar) lives a wealthy lifestyle along with his dad, Bakar and mom. Dr. Ravi returns from abroad and takes up position as Chief Surgeon in a hospital. He then meets with Nurse Shanti, who lives an impoverished lifestyle with her ailing mother, and decides to perform surgery, but she passes away, and a guilt-ridden Ravi marries Shanti much to the chagrin of his mentor, Kaka, who had hoped that he would marry his daughter, Rajni. The couple then travel to Kashmir for their honey-moon, and then settle down to a harmonious relationship. Hoping to travel even more, their plans are interrupted by the hospital's head doctor, who wants Ravi to focus on cancer research. The couple drop all travel plans and immerse themselves in research so much so that Shanti herself becomes ill, and not wanting to become a burden, leaves. The large household at the centre of the plot is run by a tyrannical old mother Shanta (Lalita Pawar). Her husband Ramdas (Bipin Gupta) is a very religious, meek man who lets her boss everyone around in the home. The home includes their eldest daughter-in-law Gauri, a widow, raising two little boys. Their middle son is Kailash (Raaj Kumar), married to a very devoted, loving woman named Sita (Devika). Their youngest son is Kamal (Rajendra Kumar), a college student, who falls in love with another student Usha (Asha Parekh). The young married daughter Bhairavi (Shubha Khote), who was living with her husband and father-in-law, has now moved back home using a trivial reason, such as how she doesn't like her father-in-law's singing. Her husband Sarang (Agha) has followed her and is staying in the household, trying his best to get his wife to come back to his home. Shanta has completely spoiled her daughter. One day, Bhairavi plants a suspicion in Kailash's head that Sita is having an affair with Kamal. Even after Kamal's marriage to Usha, Kailash's suspicions grow to the point where he leaves his wife and attempts suicide. His friend, a respectable dancer named Ragini (Meenu Mumtaz), stops him. He accepts her help and later pursues her romantically, but she sees him only as a friend, as he is a married man.
