Akhtar ul Iman (1915–1996) was a noted Urdu poet and screenwriter in Hindi cinema, who had a major influence on modern Urdu nazm.

He won the Filmfare Award for Best Dialogue in 1963 for Dharmputra and 1966 for Waqt. He was awarded the 1962 Sahitya Akademi Award in Urdu, for his Poetry Collection, Yadein (Memories), by Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters.

Widowed Lala Yodhraj Bhalla (Anupam Kher) lives in a palatial house with his daughter, Suman (Hema Malini), and son, Shashiraj (Raj Babbar). Both of his children are of marriageable age. He gets a shock when he finds out that Suman is in love with a lowly employee by the name of Ajit Bhardwaj (Rajesh Khanna), and refuses to give his consent for their marriage. Suman and Ajit get married in a simple ceremony, and Suman moves to Ajit's house, where she soon gets pregnant and gives birth to a son who they name Vikram alias Vicky (Rishi Kapoor). Yodhraj gets another shock when Shashiraj tells him that he would like to marry Rita (Moushmi Chatterjee), who comes from a poor family. Yodhraj asks Shashiraj to go for a trip out of town in his private air-plane. With Shashiraj out of the way, Yodhraj goes to a pregnant Rita and asks her never to see Shashiraj again and leaves a blank cheque with her. The very same day, Shashiraj is killed when his plane crashes; a guilt-ridden Suman moves back into her father's house along with Vikram, leaving Ajit alone and devastated; and a lone Rita gives birth to a young son named Arjun (Anil Kapoor). Twenty five years later, Yodhraj still lives in his palatial house with Suman and Vikram. A grown-up Arjun lives with his adopted father Inder Sen (Saeed Jaffrey) after the death of his mother Rita. He meets and befriends Vikram but is completely unaware that they are cousins. What happens when he discovers Vikram is his cousin?, What revenge has he got planned for his grandfather Yodhraj? and what happens to Ajit Bharadwaj who has also lost his wife Suman and son to Yodhraj.

Inspector Sunil Rana (Shatrughan Sinha) has been assigned the case of triple-homicide of the Sinha family, namely Mr. Sinha (Ashok Kumar); his son Inspector Rohan (Vinod Mehra), and Rohan's wife (Bindiya Goswami). After an investigation, Sunil concludes that the assailant can only be Dr. Singh (Kader Khan), who escapes from India, and re-locates to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, far from the jurisdiction of Bombay Police. Sunil must overcome borders to apprehend Dr. Singh, and thus bring justice to the Sinha family. It is then Sunil comes to know that Dr. Singh is not the only one involved in this homicide, which is far more complicated that he had thought it to be so.

Maharaj Singh is a proud owner of several derby-winning stallions, and lives in a palatial farmhouse with his wife, Rukmini and young son, Chimpoo. One day dacoits attack his farmhouse with a view of stealing the stallions, but Maharaj fights them, killing the son of the leader of the dacoits, Maan Singh. Maan Singh swears to avenge the death of his son, and abducts Chimpoo. Years later, a servant of Maharaj, Ram Singh, brings a young man named Badal into the Singhs lives, and tells them that he is their missing son Chimpoo. Both Maharaj, Rukmini, and their daughter, Sunita, are delighted at having Chimpoo back in their lives. Then Badal and Sunita fall in love with each other. It is then Badal confesses to Maharaj that he is not Chimpoo, but a former convicted jailbird, who was asked to impersonate him by an embittered Ram Singh. Maharaj does not want to relay this information to an ailing Rukmini, and decides to keep it quiet for the rest of their lives.

Three hardcore criminals escape from a jail by overpowering the guards and snatching their guns. Once out in the street, they first snatch a car from a man passing that way, and then steal clothes from three other passers-by, and get themselves dressed in the same. Then they forcibly enter into a newspaper editor's house, taking him and his family hostage. After many incidents they finally get killed one-by-one.

Mama Rampuri (Ashok Kumar) comes from a long line of criminals and is contemplating his latest for which he plans to enlist the services of his nephew Bhola (Deven Varma). Bhola however has had quite a few bad experiences with Mama and has been in and out of prison seven times trying to carry out Mama's mostly disastrous robbery plans.His mother (Leela Mishra) however doesn't listen to his pleas of wanting to live an honest life selling bananas or banyans and tries to inspire him by narrating the glorious deeds of his late father (her husband) who went to the prison no less than seventeen times and yet never complained. She has a heart ailment pretty soon which lands her in a hospital and poor Bhola needs a large amount of money for her treatment. He reluctantly joins hands with Mama who recruits club dancer Rita (Rehana Sultan) alongside his trustworthy gang members Abdul Keshto Mukherjee and others to plan the heist of kidnapping the only son of millionaire businessman cum antisocial smuggler Seth Dharamdas (Pinchoo Kapoor). There is also Mama's old nemesis Ghaffoor (Madan Puri) who tries to thwart his plans and harm him at all stages. Will Mama Rampuri and his team be able to successfully pull off the planned heist? Will Bhola be able to save his ailing mother in time or will he end up in prison for the eighth time? And why is Mama's car called Bada Kabutar (Big Pigeon) anyway? To find out, watch the movie.

A young man, Sunil Kohli (Rajesh Khanna), falls for beautiful Sonia (Sharmila Tagore). Soon, they get married and leave for their honeymoon. On the way, owing to bad weather, they decide to spend a night at a bungalow owned by Sunil's boss. The boss's son, Dheeraj Kapoor (Prem Chopra), tries to rape Sonia when she is alone. But Sunil arrives in time, and a fight ensues, resulting in the death of Dheeraj. Sunil is arrested and, later, sentenced to death by the court. But, on the way to prison, the police van carrying him meets with an accident. All occupants are killed. Years later, Sonia, working as a school teacher and bringing up Sunil's and her son, finds out that her husband is still alive. He is living with a new identity as Sudhir, and is married to a rich woman named Chandni (Raakhee). After escaping from the police van, Sunil met Chandni, whose lover had ditched her on learning of her pregnancy. Sunil married her to provide legitimacy to her child, in return for her help in establishing his new identity. Now, after so many years, the law is once again at his door step. This time, however, there is an added crime to his name: bigamy.

On a foggy night, Chandrashekhar (Navin Nischol), who is driving his car at high speed, meets with an accident. He walks to a nearby house to ask for assistance. When nobody answers the door, he enters the house and finds the dead body of a wheelchair-bound man. Standing nearby is a beautiful, young woman, Rani (Zeenat Aman), with a gun. She tells him that the dead man is her husband and she has murdered him. She asks Chandrashekhar to call the police. Intrigued, Chandrashekhar asks Rani to tell her what happened. She tells him that her husband, Thakur Ranjit Singh (Danny Denzongpa), was a cruel man who used to mistreat his family and used to shoot cats and dogs with his gun for amusement (which is why nobody in the house woke up upon hearing the gunshot). On this night, before Chandrashekhar arrived, they had an argument and when her husband threatened to shoot her, she tried to take the gun away from him. In the ensuing struggle, Ranjit got shot.

Jailor Manmohan Krishan is responsible for looking after convicts undergoing sentences of rigorous imprisonment. He has a young, beautiful and captive daughter named Shalini. Shalini is a poet, one day while reciting her poetry, she meets with a young man, who introduces himself as Amar, who also happens to be a poet himself. The two of them spend beautiful moments together and finds themselves attracted to each other. Shalini wants to find out why Amar is in jail. She is told in no uncertain terms that Amar is in jail for murder - for killing the brother of his former lover, Sapna. While in Germany, gorgeous looking Rita, who belongs to a gang of thieves, cons a jeweler into parting with a very expensive necklace, and is on the run from the police. She hitches a ride from ace Grand Prix racer, Ram Khanna, and plants the necklace on his person. He later graciously returns the necklace to her, and she in turns it in to her gang-leader. When the gang-leader has the necklace appraised it turns out to be a fake, and Rita is now on the run from her own gang. She again takes shelter with Ram, tells him the truth and that her real name is Meena. Ram wins the Grand Prix, and both return to India. Upon their entry at the airport, they are searched, and Ram is found to be in possession of diamonds hidden in medicinal capsules. He is immediately arrested, tried in Court, and sentenced to several years in prison. Years later he is released, and finds Meena awaiting. Both get married and decide to settle down and live life honestly. But trouble comes knocking on their door again - this time it's Ram's brother, Harnam, who wants Ram to join him in smuggling. Ram, initially refuses, but when Meena is abducted, he relents and joins his brother in a career of crime - a change that will have disastrous results for Meena and himself.
