Le film raconte l’histoire d’un riche homme d'affaires, Sanjay Singhaniya (Aamir Khan), qui tombe amoureux d'une actrice de film publicitaire, Kalpana (Asin Thottumkal). Malgré une amitié qui les lie depuis leur tendre enfance, la princesse Tara (Sarita Choudhury) et la servante Maya (Indira Varma) deviennent de farouches rivales à l'âge adulte. Pour s'être souillée ainsi, Maya est bannie du palais et fait la rencontre d'un séduisant sculpteur Jai Kamur (Ramon Tikaram) et d'une courtisane Rasa Devi (Bhanurekha Ganesan, connue au cinéma sous le nom de Rekha) avec laquelle elle développera l'art du "Kama Sutra". Puis, après ce retour au calme dans la vie de Maya, tout bascule car le prince, malgré tous les efforts de son épouse Tara pour le séduire, n'arrive pas à oublier l'ardeur de Maya et décide de retrouver cette femme. Maya est ainsi contrainte de vivre parmi les courtisanes du souverain et de laisser derrière elle son beau sculpteur, dont elle est la muse. Il sera plus tard exécuté pour avoir tenté de communiquer avec la courtisane Maya.

In the 1960s Dashrath Manjhi (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) lived in a small village Gehlaur near Gaya, Bihar, India with his family including his wife Phaguniya Devi (Radhika Apte). There was a rocky mountain near his village that people either had to climb across or travel round to gain access to medical care at the nearest town Wazirganj. One day Manjhi's wife fell while trying to cross the mountain, after which Manjhi decided to carve a road through it. When he started hammering the hill people called him a lunatic but that only steeled his resolve further. After 22 years of back-breaking labour, Manjhi carved a path 360 feet long, 25 feet deep in places and 30 feet wide.

Siddharth "Siddhu "Marathe (Aamir Khan) is a Mumbai tapori, a boxing champion. His brother, Jaidev "Jai" (Rajit Kapur), is the accounts manager and right hand man for Raunak "Ronnie" Singh (Sharat Saxena), a former boxing champion who ostensibly runs a travel agency but in reality rules the local community by terrorising people and stealing money from innocent merchants. The story begins with Col. Krishnakant and his ten men who were sacked from the Indian army as they failed in the China Gate mission. After witnessing the brutal slaying of her Forest Officer father, Sunder Rajan, at the hands of dreaded dacoit Jageera, Sandhya goes to Col. and asks for his assistance in bringing an end to Jageera's rule in the Devdurg region. Krishnakant agrees to assist her and summons ten of his fellow officers and subordinates to assist him in this mission. They assemble at Devdurg with the necessary ammunitions and arms to combat Jageera, not realizing that Jageera has influence over the local police detachment, who will prevent Krishnakant and his men to possess any guns and weapons. This does not deter the men, and they continue to stay on in Devdurg and gain the confidence of the villagers. What the villagers do not know that Krishnakant and his men had all been dishonorably discharged from the army for cowardice and retreating when attacked by the enemy.
