Roger Chapman, a wandering minister, his daughter, an infant named Margery, and Simon Gordon, a negro servant, find refuge in a cabin in the Ozark mountains. Tom Sullivan, escaping convict, appears and forces Chapman to exhange clothes with him. Sullivan's pursuers arrive and shoot Chapman in mistake for their quarry. The latter is buried as Sullivan. The ex-convict assumes the name and garb of the parson and in the interior of the hills takes up a pastor's work. With gun and will Sullivan proves to the mountaineers that he is a force to be reckoned with. He is made chaplain of the State Prison. Margery grows to womanhood. She has two suitors, both doctors, Earl Godfrey and Paul Burroughs. The latter is a conscientious physician who devotes much of his labor to aiding the power. Godfrey's goal is money and when his uncle dies and leaves him a fortune he starts on an orgy of spending. Margery yields to Godfrey's evil influence and is lured to the Oriental palace which he hs built. Her father comes to her resuce. When Godfrey later attacks Margery she is saved by Burroughs and weds him. A former prison-keeper arrives and denounces Sullivan as an escaped convict, but the Governor pardons him and all ends well.

Julian Perryam (Lloyd Hughes) gets thrown out of Oxford University and returns to the family estate outside of London. Based upon a review in a film magazine, Jimmy Valentine (Lytell), a prisoner in Sing Sing for safe-cracking, although guilty, maintains his innocence. When he obtains a pardon, he goes straight, influenced by a beautiful girl (Vale). He assumes a new identity as Lee Randall and diligently works at a bank for three years. When he is about to get married, Detective Doyle comes to town with proof of Valentine's guilt. However, the Randall identity is complete, and just as the detective is convinced and about to leave, word comes that a little girl is trapped in the bank safe and no one has the combination. Although the detective is nearby, Valentine uses his skills to open the safe, knowing that it will give away his identity. After the girl is rescued, the detective decides to leave without arresting Valentine.

Scottie Dean, passager d'un baleinier, jette par-dessus bord le Capitaine Jim Blake après que celui-ci a attaqué sa femme Isobel. Se croyant responsable de la mort du capitaine, il s'enfuit dans les Territoires du Nord-Ouest. Le sergent William MacVeigh, chargé de le rattraper, est sur le point d'aboutir quand il rencontre Isobel en train de tirer un traîneau censé porter le cercueil de son mari et, subjugué par sa beauté, permet sans le vouloir au couple de s'échapper. Le caporal Bucky Smith, un ennemi de MacVeigh, fait remarquer que le sergent a fait une faute et jure d'attraper Dean lui-même, forçant ainsi MacVeigh à arrêter Dean pour protéger Isobel. MacVeigh permet ensuite à Dean de s'échapper mais plus tard Dean revient vers MacVeigh en lui demandant de l'aide pour sa femme, malade. Dean meurt après avoir appris que Blake n'est pas mort et MacVeigh, toujours amoureux d'Isobel, va la voir. Délirante sous l'influence de la fièvre, elle le rejette, le rendant responsable de la mort de son mari.
