Sivakumar is the son of Pandari Bai, a rich man in the village. V.S Raghavan is a Gumastha who works for Zamindar (kamal Hassan). Pandari Bai arranges a marriage between Sivakumar and Aarathi. Kamal is married to vimala, an innocent girl, but he also has an eye on Aarathi, Gumastha's daughter. He manages to woo her and marry her. In the end she attempts suicide in order to escape from the hands of Kamal Hassan.

The story is about Agathiyar muni is considered to be the embodiment of one of celestial intellectual who descended on earth to enlighten human being. During wedding of Lord Shiva and Parvathi, the earth tilted to the Northern side, as the whole world was witnessing the marriage. Lord Shiva gave the responsibility of balancing the earth to Agathiyar by going to Southern side. Agathiyar is also given additional responsibility of spreading goodness and equality. Along with this he has the added task of spreading Tamil language. Many small stories , from the heaven to earth are interwoven in the movie. The stories teach one to lead simple existence without ego. It also shows how agathiyar in this journey destroy the ego of River Kaveri , Vidhaya Mount and Ravana. Thereby teaching them the greatness of humility.

Goplakrishnan and his wife and children and another is Gandhimathi and who travel her Grandson Master Prabhakar. They Passengers are goes to Tirupati , Mysore, Chamundeshwari Temple Brindavan Gardens , Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple , Thiruthani Murugan Temple Guruvayur Temple and finally the pilgrimage end into Kanniyakumari. They goes to temples are said to the history of temple and rule of temples.Sekar(Sivakumar) and Geetha(Kumari Padmini) was loves in our college days, but sekhar father was opposed to his son sekhar love, so sekhar write letter and leaves his home and join the pilgrimage, he many time requesting for geetha for our marriage proposal, but geetha was strictly said to sekhar our marriage was gets to sekhar father permission now. The end of the story sekhar and the co-passenger set some sensitive drama like sekhar commit suicide, the same time sekhar father was advertise newspaper for agree sekhar marriage. Then, who travel the passengers are arranged for sekahar and geetha another lalitha and Vasu marriage at Kanniyakumari temple.

The film revolves around Lord Murugan, his birth, marriage and his acceptance of the post of the head of the army of heaven. In Hinduism, there are six abodes of lord Muruga, known as the "Arupadaiveedu". The story behind each of the abodes are portrayed choronologically in the film. It starts with Swamimalai, where Lord Muruga (Master Sridhar) teaches the meaning of the word 'OM' to his father, Lord Shiva (Gemini Ganesan). He goes to Palani Hills after a fight over a sacred fruit, that is his second abode. Then he wins over the demon king Surapadman in Thiruchendur and that is his third abode. The King of heaven, Lord Indra offers his Daughter's hand in appreciation of Lord Muruga's Victory and he marries her in Thirupparamkunram, his fourth abode. He later marries Valli in his fifth abode of Thiruthani, later after a short dispute between both his wives they amicably settle in Pazhamudircholai, his sixth abode. All the events are summarised by Nakkeerar, a great Tamil Poet portrayed by Sirkazhi Govindarajan at the end of the film.
