The film features Prabhu, Ramki, Narmadha, Sudha Chandran and Sabitha Anand in lead roles. The film, produced by S. K. Rajagopal, had musical score by S. A. Rajkumar and was released on 17 April 1987. The film became highly successful at the box office. The film also marked the debut of S. A. Rajkumar, Ramki and Narmadha.
Synopsis
Raja (Ramki), a clever student, challenges Rekha (Narmadha), a rich and arrogant girl, to become the number one student. Rekha is the daughter of Michael (Senthamarai). She loses but she falls in love with Raja.Acteurs

Sivaji is the loving elder step-brother of Rajinikanth and Vijaybabu. After his marriage, his wife (Vadivukkarasi) sends his brothers out when he goes to Chennai. Rajini, the older of the two, toils and becomes a taxi driver to educate and treat his brother. But his brother strays and gets mixed up with some wrong-doers. He marries a girl (Ramya Krishnan) from a rich family. The girl's uncle (Jaishankar), is a smuggler who sells drugs using his brother's lorries, kills him and puts the blame on Rajini. The story begins with a young couple, Balu and Ishwarya, being chased by some goons. Ishwarya is the daughter of Rajadorai (Charan Raj) and had eloped and run away with her boyfriend Balu against the wishes of Rajadorai. Rajadorai sends his goons to track down the couple. When the goons finally track down the couple in a forest and start beating up Balu, a man (Rajinikanth) comes to the couple's rescue. When Rajadorai and his brother Ramadorai (Nizhalgal Ravi) find out about this man, they rush over to his hideout in the forest, only to escape in fear when they see him. The couple is scared and puzzled as to how the man could induce so much fear in the brothers. The man's wife Parvathi (Gouthami) then tells the couple the story of the man, whose name is Dharmadorai.

The basic injustice at the core of Gangvaa is the way the landed classes take advantage of ordinary village folk.Early on in the film, a work crew finds a pot full of gold coins, and a suitably mustache-twirling zamindar (Amrish Puri) confiscates them to add to his already massive wealth. Enter Gangvaa (Rajnikanth) to save the day; Gangvaa kills zamindar and his goons. Gangvaa puts together a band of the men who had suffered under the zamindar's tyranny. Together they hang out in the wilderness and perform Robin-Hood-esque raids for the sake of vigilante justice. At some point Jamna (Shabana Azmi) encounters Gangvaa and is smitten. Then a village girl accuses Gangvaa of rape, and Jamna is enraged - it is here that she gets down to find the truth. It turns out that the rape was actually done by a totally different guy named Gangvaa (Raza Murad), and righting this wrong wins Jamna back for our hero, but makes him a new set of enemies that he spends the rest of the film fleeing from. Also on his tail is an police inspector(Suresh Oberoi), who cannot allow vigilante justice in his district, no matter how noble the intention.
