Her real-life uncle Kamal Haasan has a guest role in the film as a bus conductor. K. Balachander directed and Chandulal Jain produced the film.
It is a story of a woman (Suhasini) who wonders when she will have time to live her own life, as she is too busy taking care of her mother, siblings, and her alcoholic brother's family.
The film was directed by K. Balachander and is a remake of his Tamil film Aval Oru Thodar Kathai (1974), which also had Kamal Hassan playing a different role. Hassan would appear in several more remakes of this film: the Telugu film Anthuleni Katha (1976) with Jaya Prada; and the Bengali film Kabita (1977) with Mala Sinha. The only remake that Hassan didn't appear in was the Hindi film Jeevan Dhaara (1982) starring Rekha.

Venkatachalam (Sarath Babu) and Indumathi (Sumithra) are siblings. Indumathi hates men and she is adamant that she will never get married. Actress Saritha comes to a small town to talk to Vaishali (Jayapradha), because she is about to play her in a film based on her life. Vaishali suffers from hysteria and angrily shuts out Saritha. The story is now told in flashback, when Vaishali's brother reveals to Saritha about her marriage to Kumar (Chiranjeevi), consisting of only 47 days, hence the title of the film. Kumar takes Vaishali to a country manor in France. She does not know French or English. Kumar already has a French first wife Lucy (Anne Patricia) living there on the top floor. He deceives both wives. He tells Vaishali that Lucy is a friend, while he tells Lucy that Vaishali is his sister.
