Bhoot Bungla is a 1965 Bollywood comedy horror film directed by Mehmood, who stars in the film alongside Tanuja and Nazir Hussain. Music for this film was composed by R.D. Burman. The film title is a common Hindi expression meaning haunted house, or literally, a ghost house.

Synopsis

Fifty years ago, Kundanlal was murdered and his wife and child vanished on a dark night, at the haunted bungalow surrounded by a jungle in the outskirts of Bombay.

Bharathi plays an deserted wife to (Vinod Mehra). She abandons her newly born son outside of a temple where he is rescued by a rikshawala (Mehmood). The boy develops polio and the rikshawala feels guilty after a doctor (Sanjeev Kumar) admonishes him. He takes care of the boy and loves him as his own. In the mean time, the boy's real-life parents reconcile and turn to a police officer (Vinod Khanna) for help in finding their missing son. when they find their child the rikshawala does not want to give him up. The policeman urges him to do, as the wealthy parents can pay for an operation that can help the boy walk again. He does sorrowfully. But the boy comes back with his parents to see the rikshawala die. The film ends with Mehmood, the actor, getting up and explaining to the audience that his death was for the camera, but polio is real and deadly and that people should get their children vaccinated.

The movie focuses on Mahesh (Jeetendra), an honest and diligent young man, who has no knowledge of his background as he was raised in an orphanage. One day, out with his friend Badru (Shahrukh Khan), he meets Reshma (Sumalatha), who is also an orphan. Badru advices Mahesh to make a move on her, though as he approaches her, the two fall in love and Badru decides to get them married. They then live a harmonious life, and soon are proud parents of a healthy young boy who they name Lucky (Manzoor Ali). Lucky grows up to be as honest and diligent as his dad, and his future appears to be very bright. When Lucky sees his father smoking, he starts to as well, but when his father stops him, he explains that an old man around his school sells him cigarettes. When Badru and Mahesh approach the old man, he tries to run. Badru chases after him, and is then run over by a truck. Badru tragically dies, leaving Mahesh, Reshma and Lucky on their own.

Seth Ramdas (Shivraj), riche veuf atteint de la tuberculose, confie son fils unique Bansi (Guru Dutt), ainsi qu'une somme de 25 000 roupies, à son employé Ronaklal, qui n'a pas d'enfant, et qui lui promet de consacrer l'argent à assurer l'éducation de Bansi afin que ce dernier devienne médecin. Croyant son employeur proche de mourir, Ronaklal déménage (prétendant partir pour Rangoun) et profite de l'argent de Ramdas pour acheter une maison et des terres. Quelques mois plus tard, l'épouse de Ronaklal donne le jour à Deepak (Sudesh Kumar). Bansi et Deepak auront des enfances bien différentes. Le premier, qui ignore tout de ses origines, n'apprend pas à écrire et est traité comme un garçon de ferme par son père adoptif. Son frère Deepak est choyé par son père qui veut faire de lui un contrôleur des impôts. L'épouse de Ronaklal aime cependant Bansi comme s'il était son propre fils.
