Mohini (Naina Sahu) is a medical student, and lives at home with her father Kishenlal Saxena Nazir Hussain, a college Professor, and her ailing mother. Her neighbours are Bipin (Shiv Kumar) and his parents. Bipin and his friends have just returned to their town from Bombay after completing their studies. One of Bipin's friends, Ravi Mehra (Biswajeet), is the son of a wealthy businessman, Amarchand Mehra (Sapru). Ravi and Mohini meet and fall in love. Bipin also loves Mohini but has never expressed his feelings. When Ravi leaves to go abroad for further studies, he promises he will get green bangles for her, as a symbol of marriage. However, soon after he leaves, Mohini is told by their family doctor that she is pregnant. Vilified and expelled from college, her father is her only support especially since her mother dies soon after hearing the news.

Madhavi (Asha Parekh) is an orphan living with her maternal uncle, who arranges her marriage with someone she does not know. Blinded in love with Kailash (Prem Chopra), she runs away from the marriage procession. She discovers Kailash in the arms of Shabnam (Bindu). Heartbroken and dejected, she returns to her uncle, who committed suicide from the setback. Madhavi realizes that she has no one in life. So she decides to leave town and head somewhere. She meets her childhood friend Poonam (uncredited) who tells her about her husband's untimely demise in an accident and she is on her way, along with her baby boy Munna, to stay with her in-laws whom she's never met before. Poonam manages to compel Madhavi to accompany her as her plight is pitiful.

After murdering a rich man named Sohanlal and covering it up as a car accident, a man named Khanna, who ordered the hit, is murdered as well, by someone he is shocked to see. It is revealed that Sohanlal's murder was actually a conspiracy of many people, also unknown. Before dying, Khanna has told the news of Sohanlal's death to his niece Asha. Some days later, seven people, including Asha, win a trip to an island in a chartered plane, courtesy a lucky draw in a gala. Chanderbabu (Nazir Hussain), a retired postmaster, lives in the village with his wife and two sons, Rajan (Paul Mahendra) and Bhanu (Bharat Bhushan). Manorama (Nirupa Roy) comes to Lucknow along with her infant daughter after the death of her husband, searching for her maternal uncle. But when she finds that her uncle sold his house and left, she becomes clueless and has nowhere to go. Moreover, her infant daughter becomes sick due to lack of food and shelter. Desperate to save her, Manorama leaves her at the gate of a wealthy man, Seth Jagatnarayan. Jagatnarayan, having no children for himself decides to adopt her and names her as Sarita. After few days, Manorama comes again as nanny and settles with them. Jagatnarayan moves to Bombay to start a new life and to hide the fact that Sarita wasn't his biological daughter. There they join by his sister and her mentally retarded son Lali.
