Vasantpur is a small princely state adjacent to India. Kamini (Peace Kanwal) and Asha (Shyama) are two sisters living with their wealthy father, Seth Hirachand (Diwan Sharar). Mohan (Talat Mehmood), is striving to become a musician, but is hindered by his father who is a petition-writer. Mohan leaves home and meets up with Kamini and her father. Seth Hirachand helps Mohan to make a name for himself as a music director. Kamini and Mohan fall in love, but Asha lets Kamini know that she loves Mohan. Having spoilt Asha, as an older sister Kamini gets Asha and Mohan married. However things don't work out between the two. Asha is disturbed by Mohan's music and finds it boring. She finds out about Kamini and Mohan's affair and consumed with rage a pregnant Asha runs after Mohan but trips down the stairs. Badly injured, she gives birth and dies handing the baby to Kamini. After a few years, Kamini and Mohan are brought together by Mohan's son, who insists on calling Kamini, mother.

Rohit, Whiskey, and Kumar (Rajendra Kumar, Rajendra Nath, and Prem Chopra respectively) are childhood friends. While travelling to his estate in the company of Whiskey, Rohit meets with beautiful Neena (Sadhana) and falls in love with her. Subsequently, he meets with her father (Raj Mehra) where they are properly introduced, and she too falls in love with him. Unknowingly, Kumar also sends his proposal for marriage to Neena, but she not only rejects it, but also makes it a laugh. Kumar is offended. He plans to take revenge and, shortly before the marriage of Neena and Rohit, just when the marriage is officially fixed, in the same night, Neena un-knowingly surrenders to Kumar, presuming that he is Rohit. After Neena gets molested, Rohit and Kumar become enemies, have a fight and Kumar loses sight in his left eye. Feeling that she is not worthy of Rohit anymore, Neena refuses to marry him.

The movie was shot in an era when educated people in cities were getting influenced by the western culture hence the people from rural areas who placed a lot of importance to values and culture, strongly abstained from marrying into city people's homes. Geeta is a girl from a well to do family and is well educated, her parents had brought up her with traditional values and respect for those values. After her graduation, her parents decide to marry her off with Ratan Chowdhury, the son of a zaminder, who had the mind frame that a highly educated wife would be incapable of handling and managing a home, specially in a joint family. Later he marries Geeta but his mentality and the talk of others stop him from accepting her. He disowns her and poor Geeta has to go back to her parents' house.

It is a thriller about a young woman, Sunita (played by Asha Parekh), who ends up married to the "wrong" man, Rajan. Rajendra lives a poor lifestyle along with his younger collegian brother, Shekhar, as well a younger sister, Meena. He is in love with a school-teacher, and both hope to get married after Meena and Shekhar's marriages. Luck shines upon them and Meena's marriage is arranged with Dr. Ramesh, while Shekhar decides to wed Shobha, the only daughter of a wealthy man obsessed with horse-racing. Rajendra mortgages his house with his paternal uncle. Then things turn sour after Meena loses her vision; the wedding gets canceled, and Rajendra is humiliated by Ramesh's dad. Rajendra decides to remain single to look after Meena, and permits Shekhar and Shobha to get married. The marriage takes place, and Shobha moves in. Shortly thereafter misunderstandings crop, lead to arguments with Shekhar and Shobha moving out to live with Shobha's dad. Then Rajendra is fired from his job, his paternal uncle takes over the house, and asks him to leave. Homeless, they turn to Shekhar for help, but he refuses to assist them in any way. Then Rajendra falls ill and gets separated from his sister, while Shekhar takes to horse-racing and alcohol, and a path that will only lead to self-destruction.
