Kulvadhu (Daughter-in-Law) is a 1937 Hindi social family drama film directed by Sarvottam Badami. Made under the Sagar Movietone banner it had music by Pransukh M Nayak, and the film starred Motilal, Sabita Devi, Gulzar and Pesi Patel.

As a publicity gimmick, Badami asked for reviews written in Marathi English, Hindi and Gujarati languages, offering cash prizes of Rs.250, Rs. 150 and Rs. 100 for the best review. The ploy worked sending audiences to the theatre to see the film. Motilal's romantic role in the film was appreciated by the audiences.

Dr. Madhurika (Sabita Devi) is a "modern" young woman, committed to her career and believes in family planning. She marries Narendra (Motilal), but first makes him agree to not wanting children as a way of controlling population growth. The first prize is won by an unemployed youth, Sumant (Motilal). Bansilal, accompanied by his niece Shashi (Sabita Devi), lands up at a hotel in Kashmir at the same time as Sumant. Due to some misunderstanding Sumant gets the room Bansilal's wife (Sunalini Devi) has booked for him. Bansilal opts to stay in a common cheaper room as Govindlal. Several comic situations follow along with Sumant and Shashi falling in love and Sumant getting black-mailed by a girl in the hotel, Manjri (Khursheed). The misunderstandings are finally cleared with the lovers getting united.

Sudhir (Motilal), a young millionaire is leading a dissipated life indulging in drinks, gambling and women due to sheer boredom. His health starts fading and after one such bout he faints. The doctor admonishes him regarding his life-style. He advises him against his fast life and suggests that he take to some physical labour, which the doctor is sure Sudhir will not be able to do. Sudhir takes up the challenge and decides to give up his home for three hundred days and live without using his wealth. He sets out into the world with nothing in his pocket. The challenges he faces and how he overcomes them are interspersed with a lot of humour and hard work as he tries to make a living. He finally ends up working in a soap factory where he falls in love with the typist Sharda (Sabita Devi). The boss Lakshmidas has a wife Ramola (Bibbo), who is attracted to Sudhir. When the boss faces problems with the factory, Sudhir anonymously sends money to help him out. Eventually the three hundred days are over, Sudhir now a healthy young man has won his bet with the doctor and a wife for himself.

The central character is the Post Master who is given a mysterious cheque for ₹500,000 to be given to anyone who will use it to benefit the people of the village. There is a postman who pretends to be lame and is secretly rich and may have sent the cheque. Then there is the postmaster's wife, who is sick and would rather use the money to cure her illness, and his beautiful daughter Seema (played by Sadhana), who has a crush on the village school master. Meanwhile all the greedy and influential people of the village are busy trying to convince everybody why they are most deserving of the money; they include the village priest, the land lord, the money lender, the village doctor and the school master, who is by far the most respected. They all decide democracy is the best means and decide to hold an election where the winner gets the money. The movie is a satirical look at democracy through various twists and turns in the plot, interweaved with a simple love story.

Raj Kumar is an honest, handsome and intelligent young man. He works as a sole trader and being a painter trade, he is unable to earn a living and unable to pay rent to his kind-hearted but talkative landlady Mrs. D'sa. One day Raj finds a wallet containing money and returns it to the owner Mr Ramnath. Ramnath admires Raj and pleased with his honesty, employs him to work in his office as a clerk. Raj meets with Ramnath's maidservant Asha and soon both fall in love. This all ends when Raj finds out that Asha is really Aarti, the niece of his employer. Unfortunately, his landlady dies consuming medicine manufactured by his employer Mr Ramnath and she passes away suddenly leaving Raj Kumar alone. The police conducts a post-mortem and as a result find out that Mrs. D'sa was poisoned. Raj became the prime suspect and is subsequently taken for questioning and is arrested and held in a cell. In the trial that he faces, however, Ramnath reveals the truth and thus Raj is saved.
