Laila Majnu is a Telugu film that released on 1 October 1949 starring A. Nageswara Rao and P. Bhanumathi. It was originally produced in Telugu and was dubbed in Tamil by Bharani Pictures. The film was a box office hit and is considered one of the best film adaptations of the classic Sufi legend of Laila and Majnu.

Synopsis

Qais Ibn Al Mulawwa, son of Shah Amri is sent to Damascus to pursue his education. There he meets and falls in love with the beautiful Laila, daughter of the Najd chieftain. Though Laila reciprocates his love in equal measure, her father opposes this match and keeps her confined in the house. Heartbroken at this separation, Qais loses his mental faculties and wanders aimlessly, always uttering the name of Laila. He is soon known far and wide as Majnoon, the obsessed. Laila is forcibly married off to Bakht, a scion of the royal family of Iraq. But she refuses to let Bakht touch her. Overwhelming misery and wretchedness of her circumstances lead to her death and hearing of her demise, the grief-stricken Qais falls dead too. The lovers unite in death.

Mothi (Bhanumathi) is a poor Lambadi girl in a village. Raja (Nageswara Rao) came to see the rural nature. He is attracted to the beauty of Mothi and both love each other. He goes home town and forgets her. Meanwhile Mothi's father settles her marriage with Parasuram (Mukkamala). She escapes from home to avoid marriage and reach the town. She joins a dance troupe and giving performances. She identifies Raja with Lata (Sriranjani) in one of her shows and goes into shock. Unable to find Mothi, Raja marries Latha. Before the facts are known, Parasuram kills Mothi, while Mothi's friend kills Parasuram.

Thangam (T. R. Rajakumari) is married to a man old enough to be her father, Rajamanickam Mudaliar (D. Thuraisamy) who has two children from his deceased first wife. The daughter is Lakshmi (S. Swaroop Singh (O. A. K. Thevar) won the respect and loyalty of the people of Senji during his rule where Hindus and Muslims lived in peace and prosperity. A son was born to Swaroop Singh and his wife Rambai (Rushyendramani), whom they named Tej Singh pronounced as Desingu (MGR) in Tamil. Swaroop Singh has a secret wife called Jaan Bibi (Lakshmiprabha), and they have a son called Dawood Khan (MGR) who was a little older than Desingu. Fearing that Dawood might pose a threat to the succession of the throne in years to come, on the advice of his commander and close confidant Yusuf Khan (T. K. Ramachandran), Swaroop Singh persuades Jaan Bibi to leave Senji, taking little Dawood with her. Desingu who has integrity and courage grows up with his childhood friend, another brave young man called Mohammed Khan (S. S. Rajendran), and two are always inseparable.

Surendranath (ANR) is the son of Zamindar (Ramanna Pantulu) who wanted to go abroad for higher studies. His parents do not agree, hence he decides to leave the house. He reaches Madras in search of a job and gets a place in the house of a traditional family as a teacher. The daughter of that house is Madhavi (Bhanumathi). She takes care of every need of the family. Surendranath's behaviour surprises her and she starts to like him. Surendranath tried to talk to her personally. As a result of some misunderstanding, she openly expresses her dislike. Unable to bear the insult, he leaves the house and meets with an accident. Her elder brother (Ramana Murthy) gets married. Surendranath goes back to his Zamindari. His father dies making him the Zamindar. He marries Janaki. Diwan (Lingamurthy) mismanages the finances. As a result, Madhavi loses some property. She wanted to meet Surendranath, but Diwan refuses permission to meet him. She comes to know that he built a village Madhavipuram on her name and felt happy. While verifying the records, Surendranath finds out the mistake happened. He wanted to meet Madhavi to request her pardon, in spite of his illness and finally dies in her hands.
