Le nombre 420 se réfère à l'article 420 du code pénal indien, qui prescrit la peine pour l'infraction de tricherie ; par conséquent, « Monsieur 420 » est un terme péjoratif pour un tricheur. Le film est centré sur Raj, un orphelin pauvre mais instruit qui vient à Bombay avec des rêves de succès. Le personnage est largement influencé par le vagabond de Charlie Chaplin, à l'instar du personnage de Kapoor dans le film de 1951 Awaara. Il a été écrit par Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, et la musique a été composée par l'équipe de Shankar Jaikishan. Les paroles ont été écrites par Shailendra.
Shree 420 a été le plus grand succès du cinéma indien de 1955, et la chanson Mera Joota Hai Japani (« mes chaussures sont japonaises »), chanté par Mukesh, est devenu populaire et un symbole patriotique de la nouvelle indépendance de l'Inde.
Synopsis
Un garçon de la campagne, Raj (Raj Kapoor), parti d'Allahabad, marche vers la grande ville de Bombay pour gagner sa vie. Il tombe amoureux de la pauvre mais vertueuse Vidya (Nargis), mais est rapidement séduit par la richesse sans entrave et contraire à l'éthique, qui lui sont présentées par un homme d'affaires sans scrupules et malhonnête, Seth Sonachand Dharmanand (Nemo) et la sulfureuse tentatrice Maya (Nadira). Il se met finalement au service de la tricheuse, ou « 420 », qui triche même dans les jeux de cartes. Vidya s'efforce de faire Raj un homme bon, mais échoue.Acteurs

Le juge Raghunath est un juge riche de district qui juge Jagga, un homme dont le père était un criminel, de viol sur peu de preuves. Kewal (Raj Kapoor) reluctantly accepts his father (Kamal Kapoor)'s demands to continue the family tradition by studying law and become a successful lawyer just like him. However, due to a lack of interest in becoming a lawyer and more interest in opening up his own theatre company, he fails his law exams and is thrown out of the house by his father. Luckily he finds a patron of the arts Rajan, (Premnath) who is the owner of a theater company, that has closed down. A childhood romance with a girl named Nimmi haunts his fantasies, and Kewal searches for her in other women, even renaming them after his former sweetheart. Judge Raghunath is a wealthy district judge who convicts Jagga, a man whose father was a criminal, of rape on little evidence. The judge believes that "good people are born to good people, and criminals are born to criminals." Jagga later escapes and kidnaps the judge's wife Leela for revenge. When he finds out that she has just become pregnant, he releases her after four days and plans a different kind of revenge. The judge suspects that Leela was unfaithful to him with Jagga, and throws her out of the house.

L'action du film se déroule dans la petite ville imaginaire d'Endora, dans l'Iowa, où Gilbert Grape passe ses journées à s'occuper d'Arnie, son petit frère souffrant de troubles mentaux. Sa mère, Bonnie, est atteinte d'obésité morbide après des années de dépression à la suite du suicide de son époux. Bonnie étant dans l'incapacité de prendre soin elle-même de ses enfants, c'est Gilbert qui a endossé la responsabilité de chef de famille. Il est commis dans un magasin d'alimentation, et passe beaucoup de temps à empêcher Arnie de grimper sur le réservoir d'eau de la ville pendant que ses sœurs Amy et Ellen s'occupent du ménage et de la cuisine. La relation entre les deux frères est faite d'attention et de protection (Gilbert interdit à quiconque de s'en prendre à Arnie). Un nouveau supermarché a également ouvert dans la ville, menaçant la petite épicerie où travaille Gilbert. Pour achever le tableau, Gilbert doit repousser les avances de Betty Carver, une femme mariée, mère de deux jeunes enfants.

It is spring.
