Aji (Jishnu) after the death of his father is forced by circumstances to take up his brother’s profession of breaking old buildings and selling the scrap. His father had taken a contact to demolished house owned by Aditya Varma (Narendra Prasad) and had taken an advance. If Aji stands to complete the work, he stands to gain over Rs 2 lakhs, which he plans to use for his sister’s marriage. But Varma’s daughter Sangeeta (Bhavana) objects, saying that her cousin had conned her father to sell out. Aji and Sangeeta have arguments and fights that lead them to fall in love with each other! Fifteen-year-old Parvathi (Annie) witnesses her family getting murdered by Jaganatha Varma (Narendra Prasad). She runs away from them to save her life. To prevent getting caught, she disguises herself as a boy named Thomas and starts living as a servant in a house of bachelors. One of the bachelors, Omanakuttan (Mukesh) discovers that Thomas is actually a girl. After hearing her story, Omanakkuttan and his friends try to help her. Kalabha Mazha tells the friendly relationship between a Hindu and a Muslim family. Madhava Menon (Thilakan) who worked in the All India Radio always respects other religions and works for the upliftment of the society. Malavika (Devika) is the eldest daughter of Madhava Menon. She is betrothed to Unnikrishnan (Krishna). She is more than a sister to her two younger siblings, since their mother had died when they were quite young. Menon, is regretful that he hasn't been able to save much money for his children, and the family finds it hard, to make both ends meet, as days pass by. There is a Muslim family staying nearby, headed by Kunjali (Mamukkoya). His son-in-law, on a job in the Middle East, had been missing for about six long years. Malavika's sister, falls for a film director, and soon realizes that her decision was wrong. Her brother on the other hand, takes up a job at a local bank, and finds himself having transformed into a goon. Later, Malavika bumps into her sister's absconding lover, and almost meets with the same fate in his hands.

Harikrishnan (Jayasurya) is the adopted younger brother of Karunan (Lal). When Karunan loses his right hand in an accident, Hari at a young age takes responsibility of his family.
