The music is composed by Rahul Dev Burman, noted for haunting melody 'Mere naian sawan bhadon' sung by both Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. The plot it is based on Gulshan Nanda's novel Sisakate Saaz, and Nanda also wrote the screenplay himself.
Synopsis
Singer Suraj (Rajesh Khanna) was presented with a veena (stringed musical instrument) by his fiancee. Thereafter, he often listens to an haunting song at nights and observes that name 'Ratna' was written on that. One day, while going for a stage show, he gets struck in heavy rain in an unknown place and goes to stay in a small motel, where he meets a woman named Ratna. During night, he observes that Ratna, singing the same song he often hears at night, going to a distant mahal (grand house of olden times). He follows her reflexively and enters the abandoned mahal. He tries to call out for Ratna, but learns from old keeper of mahal that Ratna died more than a hundred years ago and people feel that she still haunts that mahal.Acteurs

Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) is an expert gambler, has been for as long as he can remember, and has never lost a game. These skills bring him to the attention of the underworld don Ratan Das (Madan Puri), who is interested in hiring him to win large amounts of money from rich people and then influencing them into doing whatever he wants. Jai agrees to do so, and plays successfully, though unknowingly to entrap Nath (Jagdish Raj) who works for the government. After losing large amounts of money, he is blackmailed into revealing the blueprints of a top-secret military laser weapon that can hit any target within 50 miles. When the Indian police come to know of this, they assign the case to Inspector Vijay (also Amitabh Bachchan), who is asked to apprehend Jai at any cost. The only problem is that Inspector Vijay is Jai's look-alike, and is not at all a good gambler.

Advocate Jayant (Rajesh Khanna) a criminal lawyer believes that a lawyer's duty is to do service to his client alone and to bail him out of his trouble even if his client is in reality a criminal. His close friend Amit is an honest police inspector who brings many of the goons that are part of gang of smugglers led by Mulchand Malhotra but they are let off by the court when he uses his skills and knowledge about the loopholes in law. Jayant helps Mulchand in setting his workmen free from jail. Amit Gupta asks Jayant to be more responsible when he defends criminals, who are repeat offenders. Later Amit is killed and this motivates Amit's brother Vijay to join the police force. Meanwhile Priya (Jayant's sister) falls in love with Vijay and both decide to marry. But one day while going on a picnic Anu (Jayant's wife) and Priya get into trouble as their car tire gets punctured on a road near a jungle. There a drunkard who happens to be Mulchand's son rapes Anu and injures Priya. On being humiliated Anu commits suicide. Jayant also gets a clue that the death of his friend Amit was not accidental but was a deliberate attempt by some goons and that the rapist is a person known to Mulchand and his gang members. Jayant tries enlisting the help of his clients Mulchand and Meerchandani in finding the real culprits but realises that they are not responsive. Jayant vows to find the assailants, but before he can attempt anything his daughter, Nandita, is kidnapped. The kidnappers want Jayant to represent Mulchand's son in a criminal case, and get him acquitted. Mulchand says his daughter is with them and would be left once his son is let off in a court of law. Jayant gets his client out on bail. Jayant does not know that his client is the one who had raped his wife and sister, and when Jayant does find out there is noting he can do since his daughter still under the control of her kidnappers. The rest of the story is how he single handedly brings all of them to justice.

Madhavi (Asha Parekh) is an orphan living with her maternal uncle, who arranges her marriage with someone she does not know. Blinded in love with Kailash (Prem Chopra), she runs away from the marriage procession. She discovers Kailash in the arms of Shabnam (Bindu). Heartbroken and dejected, she returns to her uncle, who committed suicide from the setback. Madhavi realizes that she has no one in life. So she decides to leave town and head somewhere. She meets her childhood friend Poonam (uncredited) who tells her about her husband's untimely demise in an accident and she is on her way, along with her baby boy Munna, to stay with her in-laws whom she's never met before. Poonam manages to compel Madhavi to accompany her as her plight is pitiful.

Chandramukhi (Hema Malini), accompanied by her parents, visits the hill resort of Shimla for the first time in her life. Shekhar (Shammi Kapoor), a young singer, lives in Darjeeling with his widowed mother. He is in love with Rita (Shakila), the only daughter of the wealthy Rai Bahadur Digamberprasad Rai. Rai does not approve of Shekhar and wants his daughter to marry a wealthy Calcutta-based businessman named Chowdhry. Rita asks Shekhar to get a better position, but Shekhar is quite satisfied with his singing career. So Rita and her father relocate to Calcutta, and Shekhar follows them. An enraged Rai complains to the police, who arrest Shekhar and hold him for questioning. However, the police notice his resemblance to a China Town gangster named Mike (also played by Shammi Kapoor) who they are holding in custody. Because Mike refuses to talk, the police convince Shekhar to impersonate him in order to infiltrate the Chinatown criminal ring. Meanwhile, Shekhar's mother reveals to him that Mike may be his long-lost brother, kidnapped by gangsters as boy. Shekhar accordingly takes over Mike's life, but there is one thing he and the police overlooked - namely Mike - who escapes from police custody with the help of Rita who mistakes him for Shekhar. Mike's girlfriend Suzie (Helen) finds out Shekhar's true identity, but spares him when he reveals that Mike is alive and captured by the police, and sympathizes with him after learning that Mike was his long-lost brother. The gangsters overhear this and capture Shekhar, his life is only spared after he tells Mike his true background and the two brothers capture the gang's leader. As a result, Shekhar gets a permanent police job that allows him to marry Rita and Mike receives a reduced sentence of three years.
