Petite Maman (titre original : Kleine Mutti) est un film austro-hongrois réalisé par Henry Koster sorti en 1935.

Synopsis

Une jeune fille, élève d'un pensionnat, trouve un nouveau-né sur les marches d'un orphelinat. Elle prend soin du bébé, mais elle est immédiatement soupçonnée d'être la mère de l'enfant. Elle est donc renvoyé à l'école immédiatement. Il y a ainsi une succession de confusions turbulentes, le principal problème de la maternité illégitime est traité dans le style de la screwball comedy : La fille vient habiter dans un hôtel de luxe, avec l'intention plus tard de partir sans payer. En attendant, elle veut trouver une maison pour le bébé, mais le médecin de l'hôtel l'expulse vite de ce refuge. Ensuite, l'héroïne assume un travail en tant que vendeuse d'aspirateurs et est soupçonnée dans la maison d'un banquier d'être l'amante de son fils. Il y a beaucoup d'autres confusions jusqu'à ce que tout finisse bien à la fin.

Lotte März (Dolly Haas) is hired as a secretary at an insurance company because she is ugly; introducing her to the (male) accountants, the personnel manager says, "I hope that you will finally be able to work in peace." The men harass her and conspire to lure her into a compromising position by having one of them, Fritz Mahldorf (Max Hansen) pretend to find her attractive. The manager discovers her in an embrace with Fritz and fires her. The self-absorbed Fritz, showing remorse that is unusual for him, arranges for her to be rehired as assistant to Director Mönckeberg (Otto Wallburg, a comical figure). Lotte has fallen for him, but he makes a date at his flat with the Director's girlfriend, Lydia (Genia Nikolaieva). Soon after she arrives, so does Lotte, and then so does the jealous Director. Farcical misunderstandings ensue, including the discovery of Lydia's fur coat and a fancy-dress ball at the Director's villa in which Lotte dresses as a pirate (just like the Director). Lotte undergoes a complete makeover at a beauty parlour: haircut, perm and facial—and is transformed into an attractive flapper. (As the New York Times reviewer put it, "As always, however, the ugly duckling becomes a disturbingly graceful swan.") Fritz falls in love with her and love triumphs, although he remains a flatterer and a deceiver and she has contemplated suicide.

"Mike" (Margaret O'Brien), age 6, arrives in New York to stay with her pregnant older sister Barbara Ainsworth (June Allyson), who lives together with a group of young women, her co-players in a symphony orchestra. As the orchestra prepares to go on a tour of army camps, a telegram is received informing them of the death of Barbara's soldier husband. The girls decide to keep the tragic news from her until after her baby is born. The orchestra is shown playing several classical standards before various military audiences. The talented Iturbi variously conducts the group as well as effortlessly plays difficult piano pieces, while Durante sings comically and acts as a grandfather figure to Mike. In a surprise ending, just after giving birth, Barbara receives a letter from her husband saying he is in good spirits and convalescing in a military hospital.

One winter's night, two French nuns, Sister Margaret and Sister Scholastica, come to the small New England town of Bethlehem (most likely modeled after Bethlehem, Connecticut – given the Abbey of Regina Laudis in that real town and the proximity to New York City), where they meet Amelia Potts, a painter of religious pictures. The Sisters announce that they have come to build a hospital there, and Chicago-born Sister Margaret explains that during the war she was in charge of a children's hospital in Normandy when it became a potential target during a military campaign. As many of the children could not be evacuated, Sister Margaret made a personal plea to an American general not to shell the hospital, which the Germans were using as an observation post. The hospital was spared but at the cost of American lives, and Sister Margaret made a promise to God that, in gratitude for saving the children, she would return to America to build a children's hospital.
