Touted to be the first Indian silent full-length feature film, it was produced by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao and Shringar Nagaraj. Upon release, the film garnered highly positive reviews, and remained a box office hit. The film had a 35-week theatrical run in Bengaluru.
The film has received the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, and Filmfare Award South for Best Film. The film was premiered at the International Film Festival of India, 1988 Cannes Film Festival in the International Critics' Week, and retrospective at the Shanghai Film Festival, and Whistling Woods International Institute The film is listed among CNN-IBN's hundred greatest Indian films of all time.
Synopsis
The story is about an unnamed almost penniless young man whose fortunes change when he stumbles upon a drunken man. shot at an unnamed Indian City , actually shot at Windsor Manor , Bangalore . The hero is an unemployed young man who resides alone in a rented room. He has no luck in his job hunt and even a roadside beggar(P. L. Narayana) riles him by revealing his big stash of money. One day, a rich but drunkard businessman checks into a 5 star hotel in the city named Pushpak. When the rich man(Sameer Khakhar) is in a drunken stupor, the hero finds him and takes him to his own room. The hero is tempted when he realizes that the man is rich. He holds up the man hostage in his room and assumes his identity.Acteurs

The story is about three different women who work at a fashion export company. Janaki (Urvashi) is a typist who lives with her husband and her baby to earn for a living as her husband lost his job in a factory. Sethupathy (Kamal Haasan) is an honest and upright police officer. Three amateur thieves plot to kidnap a wealthy person’s (Saurabh Shukla) son from the boy's school. They do a trial run. However on the eve of the kidnap, the guy whose job is to operate a crane in this plan is hospitalized. The services of Avinasi aka Mumbai Xpress (Kamal Haasan), a deaf stunt man performing daredevil bike acts is roped in. Twists and turns take place where the other two gang members are hurt and invariably Mumbai Xpress is left to perform the all tasks by himself. He kidnaps a wrong boy Daddu (Hardhik), the illegitimate son of Ahalya (Manisha Koirala) and police officer Rao (Om Puri), but manages to get a huge ransom from Mehta by default. A brawl takes place between the original kidnap planners-Digambar (Vijay Raaz), Johnson (Dinesh Lamba) and Avinasi in handling Ahalya’s child but Avinasi delivers the child unhurt to his mother. He secretly listen to Ahalya's tele-con with Rao where Rao wants to settle both the ransom and sever his ties with her. Ahalya pleads and coaxes him to help her get the ransom which Rao is willing to pay. The child takes a fancy to Avinasi and wants him to be the man in their life, and gets him to agree.Ahalaya wants either Rao’s or Mehta'a money which Avinasi is holding, whereas Avinasi is in love and wants to be that protective person. Rao appoints Mehta to handle the ransom and what follows is a series of mix-ups.

This movie begins with a scientist Prof. Ramdas (Tinnu Anand) doing vigorous experiments to invent a time machine at his home laboratory. After tremendous effort eventually he becomes successful. His daughter Hema (Mohini) and her fiancé Krishna Kumar (Nandamuri Balakrishna) accidentally get into the time machine and visit the past (time of Krishnadeva Raya's Empire). At another instance, the couple gets ended up in fictional future set up by the time machine wherein, the world is about to get destroyed through radiation effect after the end of Third World War. The story revolves around one more important aspect, the Krishnadeva Raya's Empire - the diamond in a highly secured museum. A high profile thief Raja Verma (Amrish Puri) has a queer hobby of burglary of expensive diamonds from all over the world museums. He makes an attempt to rob the diamond in the present time, which was witnessed by a school kid (Tarun Kumar) on his school excursion to the museum. He is trapped inside the museum and happens to see the robbery happening in front of his eyes and the kid manages to escape from the robbers and gets rescued from the museum by Krishna Kumar.
