The movie was produced by Bhavani Hariharan, (wife of the director Hariharan), under the banner of Gayathri Enterprises. The cast of the movie included Vineeth, Manoj K. Jayan, Rambha, Nedumudi Venu, Urmila Unni, Thilakan, and Oduvil Unnikrishnan.
Manoj K. Jayan's role as Kuttan Thampuran won the hearts of audiences and critics. Noted director Shaji N. Karun did the cinematography for the movie. Music director Bombay Ravi created the music for the film.
The film won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. The film was remade in Telugu as Sarigamalu with Vineeth, Manoj K. Jayan, Rambha reprising their roles.
Synopsis
Kuttan Thampuran (Manoj K Jayan) is the son of Subhadra Thampurati and Kochanyian Thampuran of the Maangaattu kovilkkam. Kuttan has suffered from epilepsy from childhood and is rough and violent in his character and is feared by all in the village. Haridas (Vineeth) is his classmate despite being two years younger and develops a special bond with Thampuran from childhood. Haridas always accompanies Kuttan and carries iron keys to assist Kuttan in case the seizure develops. Both Hari and Kuttan grow up to be unsuccessful in their respective lives and Hari is criticized for this by his father Bagavathar who is a well known classical singer, but has not been financially successful. Hari had a liking for music, but Bagavathar discourages him from music and persuades him into a professional degree course. Kuttan meanwhile had frequent seizures from Epilepsy and is a nuisance in both home and village, despite seeking various medical treatments.Acteurs

Sachidanandan (Dileep) runs an antique shop in the Jewish street at Kochi. He is famous for old Gramophone records. Jennifer (Meera Jasmine), Pattu Set (Oduvil Unnikrishnan), ‘Saigal’ Yousuf and Tabla Bhaskaran (Salim Kumar) are Sachi's fathers close friends. The film opens with a flashback showing the family feud between families of Sathyaprathapan (Mammootty) and Bhavani (Indraja). Sathyaprathapan's sister and Bhavani's cousin are in love. The murder of Bhavani's cousin Vishnu, is wrongly accused on Balagangadharan (Lalu Alex), father of Sathyaprathapan. Sathyaprathapan's sisters commits suicide and Sathyaprathapan turns against his father. He starts to help Bhavani's family and mortgages his own house to finance her factory. A love develops between Sathyaprathapan and Bhavani. But Bhavani's greedy father wants to destroy Sathyaprathapan's family and tries to take their home. That is when Parameshwara Maman shows up, Sathyaprathapan's mom requests Maman to prove Balagangadharan's innocence. Parameshwara Mama and Sathyaprathapan finds Kuruvilla who witnessed the murder being committed by Bhavani's father goons. Meanwhile we see that Sathyaprathapan's mom faints and dies in the hospital. While in the hospital, his mom tells how Balagangadharan had a different wife and he should ask them forgiveness. He storms into Bhavani's house and accuses her dad, also trying to make her understand the truth but she doesn't believe him and stands by her father. Then Sathyaprathapan says he doesn't love her any more and vows that he will never trust a woman by remaining a chronic bachelor forever.
