Yahudi (Le Juif) est un péplum musical indien réalisé par Bimal Roy et sorti en Inde en 1958. Le film semble être un remake d'un film de 1933, La Fille du Juif (Yahudi di Ladki) réalisé par Premankur Atorthy (en hindi et en ourdou), lui-même adapté d'une pièce de théâtre d'Agar Hashr Kashmiri.
Synopsis
Le film se déroule dans la Rome antique à une époque où les Juifs sont persécutés par l'empire. Brutus (Nazir Husain) est accidentellement blessé au cours d'une parade en ville par le fils du joaillier juif Ezra (Sohrab Modi). Irascible et tyrannique, Brutus s'obstine à croire à un attentat et fait exécuter l'enfant en le faisant jeter aux lions dans l'arène du cirque. Pour tirer vengeance de Brutus, Ezra parvient à faire kidnapper sa fille, Lydia, encore enfant, qu'il renomme Hannah et élève comme sa propre fille. Devenue adulte (jouée alors par Meena Kumari), elle rencontre un homme dont elle tombe amoureuse. Mais elle ignore qu'il s'agit d'un prince romain, Marcus (Dilip Kumar), fils de l'empereur lui-même, et déjà destiné à un mariage arrangé avec la nièce de Brutus, Octivia (Nigar Sultana), qu'il n'aime pas.Acteurs

On a stormy night, Devendra (Dilip Kumar), an engineer, drives down a hill road with his friend to fetch his wife and child from the railway station. A landslide blocks their path and the friends take shelter in an old mansion off the road. Devendra finds the house uncannily familiar. In the large front room, he finds an old portrait which he recognises. His friend and the old caretaker join him, and Devendra, amidst flashes of memory from another life, sits down to tell his story while the storm rages outside.

L'histoire se situe au XVI siècle dans l'Empire moghol. Envoyé sur le champ de bataille pour affermir son caractère, le prince héritier Salim, revient au palais impérial auréolé de quatorze années de guerres victorieuses. Accueilli avec fierté par son père, l'empereur Akbar, et avec amour par sa mère, la reine Jodhaa Bai, il retrouve avec plaisir la douceur de la cour. Il y tombe follement amoureux de la danseuse Anarkali dont il veut faire sa femme. Soucieux des intérêts de l'empire, Akbar rejette violemment cette mésalliance, emprisonne la jeune femme et la condamne à mort. Le prince s'oppose alors à son père, lui contestant le droit de régir ses sentiments comme il le fait du pays. Il fait évader Anarkali, la cache et se rebelle, entraînant une partie de l'armée avec lui. L'affrontement se solde par la victoire d'Akbar qui se résout à faire exécuter son fils unique. Anarkali se livre alors à l'empereur pour sauver l'homme qu'elle aime.

Chanderbabu (Nazir Hussain), a retired postmaster, lives in the village with his wife and two sons, Rajan (Paul Mahendra) and Bhanu (Bharat Bhushan). He continues to live there and work for the Zamindar (landowner), while his children are getting their education. Rajan is studying for his law exam. The central character is the Post Master who is given a mysterious cheque for ₹500,000 to be given to anyone who will use it to benefit the people of the village. There is a postman who pretends to be lame and is secretly rich and may have sent the cheque. Then there is the postmaster's wife, who is sick and would rather use the money to cure her illness, and his beautiful daughter Seema (played by Sadhana), who has a crush on the village school master. Meanwhile all the greedy and influential people of the village are busy trying to convince everybody why they are most deserving of the money; they include the village priest, the land lord, the money lender, the village doctor and the school master, who is by far the most respected. They all decide democracy is the best means and decide to hold an election where the winner gets the money. The movie is a satirical look at democracy through various twists and turns in the plot, interweaved with a simple love story.
