Dans les années 1950, Laurent, fils de gynécologue, vit la vie d'un adolescent de 14 ans dans une famille bourgeoise de province, il est élève d'un collège religieux et participe à un groupe de scouts. Son père est souvent absent et il passe son temps à écouter du jazz et à chahuter avec ses frères de 16-17 ans qui le dévergondent. Son plus grand réconfort est sa mère, une belle et jeune femme d'origine italienne, joyeuse mais désenchantée par le train-train quotidien. Lorsque Laurent se voit atteint d'un souffle au cœur qui le pousse à aller en cure, sa relation avec sa mère se resserre plus que jamais.

Au début du film, une jeune femme arrive dans un petit hôtel qui propose des chambres et en option "the girl" ; elle vient prendre la place laissée vacante par une prostituée précédente. Le couple qui tient l'établissement lui concède le gîte et le couvert, mais la fille des propriétaires ne supporte bientôt plus cette situation qui lui fait honte et l'empêche de présenter son fiancé à ses parents ; elle se montre donc très désagréable avec la nouvelle "locataire". La situation se complique encore lorsque tout juste sorti de prison, l'ancien proxénète de cette dernière retrouve sa trace.
