Basu Bhattacharya (1934–1997) was a Hindi film director, most famous for his 1966 film Teesri Kasam, starring Raj Kapoor and Waheeda Rehman (based on a short story - "Maare Gaye Gulfam" by Phanishwar Nath 'Renu'), which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 1967; he also produced Sparsh in 1985 starring Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah, which won the Filmfare Best Movie Award and the most famous box office hit and critically acclaimed film directed by him remains Avishkaar starring Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore which received five stars in Bollywood Guide "Collections" and Rajesh Khanna received Filmfare Best Actor Award in 1975. In 1981 he was a member of the jury at the 12th Moscow International Film Festival.

He started his career in 1958 by assisting, Bimal Roy in films like, Madhumati and Sujata and later married, Bimal Roy's daughter, Rinki Bhattacharya, much to Bimal Roy's disapproval. This created a rift between him and his mentor. The couple had a son Aditya Bhattacharya (director), and two daughters: Chimmu and Anwesha Arya (a writer). Later after much domestic abuse, his wife Rinki moved out in 1983, and the couple formally divorced in 1990. Rinki went on to write an anthology on Domestic Violence in India, titled, Behind Closed Doors – Domestic Violence in India and became a successful writer, columnist and documentary filmmaker.

Mansi reluctantly accepts Reena's offer to pay for the shoes, not realizing that Reena has paid for these shoes with a secret agenda that will open a new door in Mansi's life dragging her to prostitution to satisfy materialistic needs.

Meeta Sen (Tanuja) and Amar Sen (Sanjeev Kumar) have been married for several years. Due to Amar's hectic work schedule, the couple did not have children, as there was no time for intimacy. Meeta decides to take matters into her own hands, gets rid of the servants, save for Hari (A. K. Hangal), and decides to run the household on her own. This gets the couple to be closer, and eventually they do get intimate. And then Meeta's old flame Shashi Bhushan (Dinesh Thakur) not only re-enters Meeta's life, but also gets employed in the same organization as Amar, throwing their marriage again in jeopardy. One day while at home Amar and Shashi discuss their work and Amar tells that he'll join the office from tomorrow because he's fine now from his flu. While Shashi leaves, Amar sees him talking with his wife. The next day he asks Meeta to call for Shashi in an intimidating and arrogant tone, after Shashi leaves, Amar confronts Meeta and she explains their past relationship to him. Amar leaves the house without saying anything and asks Shashi to resign, though Shashi already has written his resignation letter because he sees himself as a reason of upheaval in their lives. Knowing this Amar says that' The past comes between us only when we aren't able to live the present completely'. After reaching home Amar tries to tell Meeta but she's circumlocuting in an amusing manner and says that she has understood and tells him that she has understood that he has understood. The movie ends with them embracing each other.

Anirudh (Naseeruddin Shah) rencontre pour la première fois Kavita (Shabana Azmi) lorsqu'il entre par erreur chez elle. Kavita est musicienne, et c'est guidé par son chant qu'Anirudh arrive chez elle. Ils se retrouvent quelques jours plus tard chez Manju (Sudha Chopra), une amie de Kavita dont le mari connaît Anirudh. Anirudh propose à Kavita de venir faire du bénévolat au sein de son institution, dans le cadre d'un programme visant à rapprocher non-voyants et voyants. Kavita, qui mène une vie de recluse depuis le décès de son époux trois ans auparavant, commence par refuser mais change d'avis après une visite dans l'atelier des enfants. Elle accepte de venir régulièrement raconter des histoires aux enfants ou leur apprendre des chansons. Encouragée par Manju, elle commence aussi à fréquenter Anirudh en dehors de l'institution. Leur relation est cependant rendue difficile tant par les difficultés qu'éprouve Kavita à faire le deuil de son mari que par l’extrême susceptibilité d'Anirudh, complexé par son handicap. Peu après leurs fiançailles, une série de remarques faites par leurs proches amène Anirudh à penser que Kavita l'épouse plus par pitié et par sens du sacrifice que par amour. Il rompt alors leurs fiançailles sans donner d'explications. Mais Kavita, qui s'était de plus en plus impliquée dans la vie de l'institution, continue de venir y travailler. Anirudh ne supporte pas de l'y rencontrer tous les jours, et lui demande de mettre fin à ses activités auprès des enfants. C'est Manju qui résout alors la situation en expliquant à Anirudh que Kavita a autant besoin de lui qu'il a besoin d'elle. Les dernières images du film montrent Anirudh se dirigeant vers la maison de Kavita.
