A middle class Orthodox Brahmin family mother Pandari Bai has two sons, Sundaresan(Rajinikanth) and Ram Kumar(Sreekanth). Her both sons most loved for his mother. Sundaresan works at Charted Accountant. He is a straight forward and sincerely quite man. so, his colleagues was teased him. Younger brother Ram Kumar studied at a college, but he is very arrogant and misbehaves with the college girls, teased professors.He was come class to irregularly and not interested his studies. Thengai Srinivasan is a widower and son-in-law of Pandari Bai and Uncle of Sundaresan and Ram Kumar. He have sister.She is name Meenakshi(Prameela). She is dreaming of marrying a rich man, but as they are ask more dowry. finally, Pandari Bai decides Meenakshi get married for elder son sundaresan. Uma(Jayachitra) was a bold girl .Sambantham(Y. G. Mahendran) was interested with her. Sambantham was give love letter to uma, but Uma and her friends was racked and sambantham was complained to his friend ram kumar. Ram kumar and sambantham friends are come to Sheriff Iyer house and complaint to his daughter Uma .She was foe of Ram Kumar. Uma was not respect with Ram kumar complaint.So, Ram told to his friend sambantham forgot your love. The Next day Ram Kumar spoils both their names writing by wall badly in the collage compound wall about Uma. The rumor was spread to entire college. So, Uma decides to marry him. Uma and her father comes to Ram kumar's house and tell lies to his mother. ram kumar and uma love each other. Pandari Bai makes Ram Kumar tie "Thali" . Uma is a rich girl and daughter of Sheriff Iyer(V. K. Ramasamy). So, Meenakshi develops jealousy on Uma. After Ramkumar marriage Sunderasan behavior changes on forced his wife Meenakshi. Sundaresan goes to wrong path and worked on illegally to Soma Sudaram(S. V. Ramadoss). Ram kumar was dismissed from collage. so his not able to write exam. So, Ram works as house broker and with his get salary buys gifts for his family members except Uma. Because he must avoid her. Ram Kumar was mostly hated his wife Uma. But Uma try to her husband was goes to high position and correcting for his bad behaviors. Ram was changed totally and look like a new man. Meenakshi and Uma goes to temple at the time Masilamani (V. Gopalakrishnan) met meenakshi and he give some files and told it was corrected sudaresan for immediately. Uma was hear all news and she was found the all truth of hidden secrets of Sundaresan and told her mother-in-law Pandari Bai. Pandari Bai angery with her son Sundaresan,and requested to him leave the illegal work. But Meenakshi was argue to her mother-in-law and decided we goes to neutral family and come from new house. After Sundaresan activities was goes crudely, he was ever heavily drinking and smoking and goes to night clubs. And Sundaresan not spending time for his wife. Then, Ram Kumar Was accepted Uma for as heart and soul, they life was goes to calmly and happy. Then Meenakshi was felt to Sundaresan. He was totally changed reasonable for her jealous character only so, she was cried. Sundaresan Mother Pandari Bai was die bedded Uma was told to Meenakshi. Meenakshi wakeup Sundaresan but he is not steadily. Sundaresan was heavily drinking and flatted to bed. Then Ram Kumar was do the ritual event. Finally, Sundaresan was feel about his mother death and goes to police station approve his all crime and illegal activities and surrendered.

The title of the movie Aayiram Poi (ஆயிரம் பொய்) means A 1000 lie in Tamil. Cho Ramaswamy Famous Novel "yaaro Iver Yaaro". An old Tamil saying goes like "Its alright to tell a 1000 lies to make a marriage work" and this movie closely follows that old adage. Chinnadurai intensely dislikes his Brother-in-law, Kanakasabai owing to an insult in the past. So Chinnadurai stands in the way of a marriage arrangement for his daughter, Malathi (Vanisri)and Kanagasabai's son Ravi (Jaishankar).

Gopinath (Gemini Ganesan) falls in love with Janaki (Sowcar Janaki) and they get married in Kasi. The marriage is not accepted by Gopinath's mother and the couple gets separated. Janaki is pregnant and her father (V. S. Raghavan), realizing that no man will marry Janaki a second time, decides to make her a collector. Gopinath meanwhile had moved to South India, where he later married Jaya (Jayanthi) by hiding his previous marriage. They live a happy life with their three children and Jaya's father. Gopinath works as a clerk in the collector's office. A new collector arrives at the office, and it turns out to be Janaki. They tend to work together and Nagesh spreads a rumour across stating that there is an affair between Janaki and Gopinath. This rumour reaches Jaya and she is completely disturbed. Jaya discovers the secret of Gopinath's affair with Janaki. Meanwhile the sons of both Janaki and Jaya, Ramu and Prabhakar drowned in water and have been admitted to Hospital. Somehow Jaya manages the disturbance of the secret and accepts Janaki as her sister. But Ramu dies in hospital while Prabhakar survives. Jaya gives Janaki her son as a gift. Janaki and Prabhakar leave for abroad as Janaki got her duty abroad.

Maadhu (Nagesh) is a destitute orphan who performs odd jobs in a multi-family tenancy for a living. For the services he renders, he's allowed to sleep under the stairs of the tenancy. He also attends college with the help one of his professors. Among few people who understand his situation, and are ready to help are Major Sundrarajan and Nair (Muthuraman). He overhears one of the tenants speaking to her husband of getting him married to their daughter (Jayanthi) who is said to be psychologically challenged. He forcefully makes his mind to love their daughter even before they propose a marriage, so as to calm himself that the girl is none other than the girl he loved and not some unknown psychologically challenged girl. How she proves that she's indeed a normal person and also helps Maadhu to prove his worth forms the rest of the plot.

A middle-class joint family is living happily run by the responsible father Ethiraj, a retired headmaster. He has three sons – Maheshwaran, Raman, and Krishnan. Maheswaran is a Hindi professor, married to Parvathi and they have 5 children. Raman, a clerk in high-court is married to Sita and they have two children. Krishnan, a medical representative is married to Rukmani. Apart from them, Sumathi, the younger sister of Sita also stays in the same house, as she is pursuing higher studies in the same city. Though it’s a joint family, the father has set up his three sons in three different portions in the same house, and takes turns to eat in each of his son’s house, to avoid any possibility of problems between them. The sons give their salaries to their father, and all the financial matters are dealt by him efficiently. He is respected and feared by everyone in the family. Wrong-doers in the house-hold are made to stand on a bench by him as punishment.

Mohan (Nagesh) is a tailor who lives with his younger sister Vimala (Jayalalithaa). Orphaned at a very young age, Mohan goes through a life of hardship and fulfill all his sister's wish. Womanizer Rajinikanth (A. V. M. Rajan) lures Vimala and cheats on her. Unable to face her brother, she commits suicide. Mohan confronts Rajinikanth and in a fit of rage kills him. A wild search is on by the cops and the fugitive hides in 'Major' Chandrakanth (Major Sundarrajan) house. Mohan is amused and fascinated by Chandrakanth virtues and how he manages to live though he is blind. Mohan reveals why he is on the run from law and ironically the deceased happens to be Chandrakanth's youngest son. Chandrakanth feels humiliated for nurturing Rajinikanth and is sorry for Mohan's plight. In the end Inspector Srikanth (Muthuraman), eldest son of Chandrakanth arrests Mohan along with his father for his hospitality to a criminal.
