Having read horror stories about wicked stepmothers, the gang is determined to break up the marriage between Darla Hood's widowed father and his new bride. Never bothering to find out, as Darla has, that the second Mrs. Hood is a wonderful woman, the kids pull off all sorts of pranks at the wedding ceremony, from playing the radio too loud to releasing a cylinder of laughing gas. The wedding guests start smiling then laughing as the gas fills the room. Someone in the building discovers what they're doing and shuts off the canister. The wedding is temporarily postponed and the gang is sentenced to a spanking, assembly-line style.

Lors de la Première Guerre mondiale, dans un pays imaginaire nommé la Tomainia (Tomanie en VF) et ressemblant beaucoup à l'Allemagne, un soldat maladroit sauve la vie d'un pilote de chasse nommé Schultz. Tous deux réussissent à s'enfuir en avion mais l'appareil s'écrase et le soldat est blessé. Devenu amnésique, le soldat passe de longues années à l'hôpital, coupé du monde. Entre-temps, la Tomainia est devenue un régime dictatorial et fasciste, dirigé par Adenoïd Hynkel (une caricature d'Adolf Hitler), et les Juifs sont persécutés comme sous le régime nazi.

Trois agents du ministère soviétique du commerce, Iranoff, Buljanoff et Kopalski, sont envoyés à Paris pour vendre, afin d'acheter des machines agricoles, un lot de 40 bijoux confisquées à des aristocrates pendant la révolution russe. Ils font la connaissance du sympathique comte Léon d'Algout. Ils ignorent que celui-ci est payé (de différentes façons...) par la Grande Duchesse Swana, russe blanche immigrée à Paris, pour récupérer ses bijoux qui font partie du lot. Le comte distrait les trois émissaires en leur faisant goûter aux « charmes décadents » du capitalisme. Mais l'Union Soviétique dépêche Ninotchka Yakouchova, communiste dogmatique et inflexible pour reprendre les choses en main. Elle trouve sur son chemin le comte d'Algout, bien décidé à lui mettre des bâtons dans les roues. Elle éprouve la plus vive aversion pour cet oisif corrompu. Il est tout à fait impossible dans ces conditions qu'une idylle se noue entre eux... Théoriquement.

Harry Van (Clark Gable), an American World War I veteran, tries to reenter show biz and ends up in a faltering mentalist show with an inept, aging alcoholic, Madame Zuleika (Laura Hope Crews, who also appeared in Gone with the Wind as Aunt Pittypat). The Stooges are once again unemployed. After an unsuccessful attempt to steal a watermelon from a deliveryman (Cy Schindell), which lands them in trouble with a cop (William Irving), the boys wind up at the offices of the Canvas Back Duck Club. The club, run by conmen Blackie (Lynton Brent) and Doyle (Wheaton Chambers) needs some salesmen and the trio have no trouble getting the job because, unbeknownst to them, the whole thing is a scam. Dressed in duck-hunting gear, Larry, Moe and Curly invade the police station and barge right into the office of the police chief (Bud Jamison). The Stooges somehow convince him, the mayor, and the entire police department to join up.

Jenny Swanson (Blondell) is a waitress in a small college town whose goal is to go to Paris. Jenny rationalizes a little gold-digging and blackmail to achieve her goal.
