Synopsis
The film opens with a high tech person's (Kamal Hasan) attempt to kill Chief Minister Madhava Menon (Thilakan), but due to circumstances, he fail in his attempt. Later Johnson (Kamal Haasan) happens to watch a Mimicry show of an artist (Jayaram) imitating several celebrity voices. Johnson convinces Jayaram himself as a government employee and makes him to mimic the voice of Madhava Menon reading out false promises through TV and radio to the public and the image of Madhava Menon gets affected in public.Acteurs

The film unfolds after eight people and a child get stuck in the lift.They include the lift operator (Indrajith), a police commissioner (Ganesh Kumar), the apartment's builder and his dancer-wife (Baiju and Remya Nambeesan, respectively), an alcoholic writer (Prathap Pothen), an IT professional and his girlfriend (Rejith Menon and Sruti Menon, respectively), an American-returnee (Nandhu) and a young boy (Master Devaraman), who intermittently keeps enquiring about his mother (Meghana Raj). Lonappan (Jayaram), the protagonist, is a complacent inmate of a lunatic asylum, whose life becomes the subject of the graduation film of a movie-school student (Geethu Mohandas). As the social activist in her dominates the film-maker, she, with the help of her sub-collector fiance (Biju Menon), gets Lonappan released from the asylum and tries to find him a normal life. The story takes a serious turn as Lonappan becomes an integral part of Meera's life and she finds whole things upside down because of his presence at home. She gives him a job in a school. But Lonappan turns out to be a misfit in society. In the meantime, Lonappan gets closer to a child in the school. But he finally decides to go back to the mental asylum and live the rest of life with the inmates. He discards all the facilities offered by Meera. The film ends when her movie titled Timepiece bags award for the best film at the Cannes Film Festival.

The movie begins with an older man's dream; Unni (played by Mohanlal) is roused from his house and told to come in haste to see his father (someone Unni has longed believed to be dead). He is greeted by a crowd of people who begin to make fun of him and Unni wakes up. An astrologer interprets the dream as a harbinger of Easwara Pillai's (Unni's father) death and advices Unni do the last rites for his "dead" father. During the rituals, Unni comes to find it difficult to go through with the rituals as he then believe that his father is alive; he walks away declaring that his father is not dead.
