The film written and directed by Hari was a success at the Chennai Box office and the music was rendered by Bharadwaj. Oru Vaarthai song was very famous around South India. This movie was also Nayanthara's debut in Tamil films.
Synopsis
Ayyadurai (Sarath Kumar) has been the local MLA ever since he killed the sitting MLA (OAK Sundar), who was robbing his constituents off their food. Maadasamy (Napoleon), who belongs to a different caste, has been his right-hand man since those times. Maadasamy's daughter Selvi (Nayanthara) loves Ayyadurai's son Chelladurai (Sarath Kumar), but he does not reciprocate her feelings. Karuppusamy (Prakash Raj), son of the MLA who was killed, holds hatred for Ayyadurai. He plans to become the MLA by either killing Ayya or driving a wedge into his friendship with Maadasamy, thereby getting the votes of everyone belonging to their caste.Acteurs

The story opens with a couple with twins sitting in a train. However, a thief snatches one of the sons, and after stealing the jewellery of the son, leaves the baby. However, the baby is found by a childless couple in a village. The couple hail from a large and powerful family, and they raise him as their son without telling him the truth. Thus, the twins grow up in different environment. The one living with the parents (Vasudevan a.k.a. Vasu) grows up in Chennai to become an officer in a private investigative agency. The other son, Vetrivel a.k.a. Vel grows up in Dindukkal and becomes a rustic young man.

Raghavan (Sarathkumar) and Velu (Vadivelu) work as cooks in a non-veg hotel. Raghavan loves Geetha (Kiran) who is the daughter of a rich man (Vijayan), but her father is against this love and insults him as a poor man. Raghavan challenges that he will be rich in a year. There is a subplot in the story, for Meenakshi (Sharmili), a daughter from a rich family; she is the apple of the eye of the family. Meenakshi ran home with her lover Raju, who worked as a driver to her house. He tells that his friend Dinesh will help them. However, Raju escaped because he saw a bad dream where he is killed by her family as if it will happen in reality. Due to that he vanishes. Raghavan understood her plight and helps her.

The film begins in Nallur, a small village in Thoothukudi district in southern Tamil Nadu. Duraisingam (Suriya), is the honest police sub inspector of Nallur, assisted by his bumbling colleague Erimalai (Vivek). He belongs to Nallur with his father having a respectable status in the village. His family business is provision stores and Duraisingam wants to join it, but he joined police due to his father's wishes. He resolves most of the problems in his village with non-violence and mutual counselling. He uses force only when the situation demands it, thereby gaining much reputation and love from the villagers. Mahalingam (Nassar) is an industrialist in Chennai and a friend of Singam’s father (Radha Ravi). He comes to the village with his beautiful daughter Kavya (Anushka Shetty). Eventually Singam and Kavya fall in love with each other.

Veera Pandi (Raj Kiran), landlord who is also the most respected person in Pandiapuram, a hamlet near Sivaganga. He is a do-gooder who commands respect from all and is feared the most by his enemies. Selvam (Dhanush) is his loyal son, who always does the right things at the right time and sees his father as his role model. Rajalingam (Prakash Raj), the local MLA, who has risen to his position mostly because of the influence enjoyed by Veera Pandi in the region. Rajalingam doesn't share the good motives of Veera Pandi. He has come into politics to enjoy power and earn lot of money. Veera Pandi tries to influence him, but the MLA has no intention to listen to him. At the same time, he cannot afford to ignore Veera Pandi. Meanwhile,Veera Pandi, who has many enemies because of his strictness, wants to protect his son from them. So he sends him to his uncle who lives in Trichy.
