Gunasundari Katha (Telugu: గుణసుందరి కథ) was a 1949 Telugu film directed by Kadiri Venkata Reddy and starring Sriranjani in the title role as Gunasundari. It is loosely based on the William Shakespeare's King Lear and his three daughters. Sri Tulasi Jaya Tulasi song by P. Leela was a hit with public and sung by housewives even today.

The main characters in the film are in the public service, most of them in corrupt, negative roles, and there are many villains instead of one main villain. Dharma Rao (Gowrinatha Sastry) is the Chairman of the municipality. The municipal contractor, a local businessman, and his associates make up the rest of the corrupt cast. They use their influence for their own personal ends in secret. The municipal counsellor, however, Ramadasu (Lingamurthy), who is also a newspaper editor, is honest and uncorrupted. What happens to all these characters makes up the plot of the movie.

Subhadra (the sister of Balarama and Krishna) marries a Pandava named Arjuna, and their son Abhimanyu falls in love with Balarama's daughter, Sasirekha. The families decide to marry them when they reach adulthood. By the time Abhimanyu and Sasirekha grow up, the Pandavas have lost a dice game to the Kauravas due to Sakuni's manipulation. Krishna, furious at an action of Dussasana that has insulted Draupadi, saves Draupadi. Balarama teaches the Kauravas a lesson and later reaches Hastinapuram. Sakuni and Duryodhana respect Balarama; after manipulating him, they seek his favour by requesting that Sasirekha be married to Duryodhana's son Lakshmana Kumara. They intend to force Balarama and Krishna to support them if the Pandavas wage war after their fourteen-year exile. Unaware of this, Balarama accepts.

The queen of Ujjain is keen for her daughter Indumathi (alias Indu) to marry her brother Surasena, a timid and mentally unstable person. When the gardener's son 'Thota' Ramudu beats Surasena at a concert for irritating the common people, he is summoned by the king to the court. His boldness leaves a considerable impression, but when Ramudu declares his love for Indu a day before his death sentence for meeting Indu secretly, the king is reminded of the astrologers' prediction that only a brave man can save her from a wicked sorcerer. Lokanatham (Gummadi) is the proprietor of Annapurna Rice Mill, and Paramesam (N.T. Ramarao) works as Gumasta under him. Both characters compose the team Todu Dongalu and commit various crimes. One day, one of the factory employees Ramudu (Maddali) dies of electrocution. Todu Dongalu throw his dead body from the hill top without the knowledge of the other employees. Paramesam feels guilty and suffers from a heart problem, and the ghost of Ramudu tries to empower Paramesam to stay alive. Several doctors declare that he would not live more than a month, so Paramesam goes to a nearby town for peace of mind. He encounters an employee who is living an idealist life. This transforms him and he returns to the village, convinces his proprietor and sanctions compensation of 2,000 ₹ to the family of the bereaved Ramudu. This relieves him from the mental anguish he suffered. The proprietor hands over the factory keys to him with confidence.
