Devdhar (Rishi Kapoor) is a poor orphan who in his childhood had a magnetic friendship with Manorama (Padmini Kolhapure), the only daughter of the rich and powerful Thakur. Although scores of people migrate to Bombay, from all over India, most do not even have a roof to live under. Some who are lucky manage to find accommodations but pay very high rents, and others who find accommodations refuse to vacate under any circumstances. Two such tenants are Mrs. Laxmi Abhyankar and her employed daughter, Jaya, who live in a flat in Pali Hill area. They had rented this flat from Lucknow-based Kundanlal Choudhury 15 years ago and have been paying him the same amount of Rs.500/- since then. Kundanlal's son, Anil, comes to Bombay to seek employment, and does get employed. His dad wants him to go and live with the Abhyankars, which he does. He falls in love with Jaya and both plan to get married soon. While in Lucknow, Kundanlal misses his son and re-locates to Bombay, and would like the Abhyankars to vacate the flat. Jaya and Laxmi refuse to vacate, and ask Anil to leave, which he does. Now both Anil and his father reside in a small room, and file a complaint in the local court to arrange to evict the Abhyankars, who have also sworn to fight this matter right to the very end. Watch as lawyers take over their respective lives, get their fees, and get adjournment after adjournment - leaving the Abhyankars and the Choudhurys hanging in suspense as to what is going to happen next.

Wealthy industrialist, Nanda, is enraged when he finds out that his eldest son, Ramesh, has fallen in love with a poor woman, Seema, and wants to marry her. He asks his son that if he marries her, he will exclude him from his will. In answer to that, Ramesh marries Seema and leaves the Nanda household. When Nanda's younger son, Ravi, returns home he is told that his brother is away on business. Ravi does find out that Ramesh had been asked to leave by their father. He manages to convince his dad to change his mind about Ramesh, and sets off to find Ramesh. He finds out that Ramesh and Seema are no longer alive, but Seema had given birth to a son, and left him in the care of her sister, Kanchan. Ravi meets Kanchan, and both fall in love with each other. When Kanchan finds out that Ravi is Nanda's son, she is angry, and refuses to have to do anything with Ravi, as she is sure that she too will be rejected by Nanda, when he finds out that she is poor, and related to Seema. What Ravi and Kanchan don't know that Nanda has an ulterior motive, as he wants to adopt Ramesh's son - by hook or by crook.

Maya (Padmini Kolhapure) tente de se suicider lors de sa nuit de noce, mais son mari, Anand (Naseeruddin Shah), un médecin veuf, parvient à la sauver. Elle lui explique alors les raisons de son geste : elle a été contrainte de l'épouser, alors qu'elle souhaitait se marier avec un chanteur de rue, Prem Pratap. Leur histoire d'amour est racontée dans un flashback : Prem (Anil Kapoor) et son assistant, le jeune Chottu, venus à Mumbai pour faire carrière dans le cinéma, louent une chambre chez les parents de Maya. Maya tombe immédiatement amoureuse du chanteur, mais celui-ci, estimant n'être pas un parti digne d'elle, repousse ses avances. Il finit cependant par accepter de l'épouser, mais les parents de Maya les en empêchent. Le Dr Anand s'engage alors à retrouver Prem et à divorcer de Maya. Il lui demande cependant de rester avec lui pour sept jours, afin que sa mère, gravement malade, puisse mourir en ayant l'illusion que son fils a trouvé une épouse. À la mort de sa mère, il réunit Maya et Prem. Celui-ci refuse cependant de briser le mariage d'Anand et de Prem, en affirmant que cela serait contraire à la culture indienne.

Widowed Lala Yodhraj Bhalla (Anupam Kher) lives in a palatial house with his daughter, Suman (Hema Malini), and son, Shashiraj (Raj Babbar). Both of his children are of marriageable age. He gets a shock when he finds out that Suman is in love with a lowly employee by the name of Ajit Bhardwaj (Rajesh Khanna), and refuses to give his consent for their marriage. Suman and Ajit get married in a simple ceremony, and Suman moves to Ajit's house, where she soon gets pregnant and gives birth to a son who they name Vikram alias Vicky (Rishi Kapoor). Yodhraj gets another shock when Shashiraj tells him that he would like to marry Rita (Moushmi Chatterjee), who comes from a poor family. Yodhraj asks Shashiraj to go for a trip out of town in his private air-plane. With Shashiraj out of the way, Yodhraj goes to a pregnant Rita and asks her never to see Shashiraj again and leaves a blank cheque with her. The very same day, Shashiraj is killed when his plane crashes; a guilt-ridden Suman moves back into her father's house along with Vikram, leaving Ajit alone and devastated; and a lone Rita gives birth to a young son named Arjun (Anil Kapoor). Twenty five years later, Yodhraj still lives in his palatial house with Suman and Vikram. A grown-up Arjun lives with his adopted father Inder Sen (Saeed Jaffrey) after the death of his mother Rita. He meets and befriends Vikram but is completely unaware that they are cousins. What happens when he discovers Vikram is his cousin?, What revenge has he got planned for his grandfather Yodhraj? and what happens to Ajit Bharadwaj who has also lost his wife Suman and son to Yodhraj.
