Nima (Rekha) and Balraj Kohli (Shashi Kapoor) are happily married middle aged couple, living in rich neighborhood of Mumbai. They have two boys,eldest was Sagar(Raj Kiran) and youngest was Babbu. Things seem to go smoothly and Sagar falls in love with medico Sarita (Poonam Dhillon), who easily gains the approval of Sagar's parents. Slowly story reveals that Nima was Balraj's second wife and not actually the biological mother of Sagar. Balraj was the husband of Sharada (Raakhee) who was elder sister of Nima. When Nima lost her husband in an accident, immediately after her marriage, shocked Sharada falls off the stairs, damaging her head. She had been in a mental institute since 14 years. As Balraj had no one to manage his household in the absence of Sharada, Nima stays there to look after Balraj and seven year old Sagar. Seven years after the accident, Sharada and Nima's father, hopeless of Sharada's recovery, convinces Balraj and Nima to get married.

Aman (Sanjay Dutt) is an impoverished, lame orphan who is befriended by wealthy Akash Verma (Salman Khan) during his childhood. Akash's parents adopt Aman and give him their family name, so Akash and Aman grow up as brothers. While Akash is a womaniser, Aman takes to writing poems under the pen name Sagar. The poems get published, and Aman becomes very popular. One of his fans is a young woman by the name of Pooja Saxena (Madhuri Dixit), who corresponds with Sagar. Akash meets Pooja and falls head over heels in love with her. When Aman comes to know of this, he asks Akash to pose as Sagar, which he does, then Pooja and Akash fall in love with each other. A heartbroken Aman looks on, as he knows that although women may like his poetry, they will never come out openly and love him when they see his handicap. Akash discovers that Aman loves Pooja and that he is actually Sagar, through a string of events triggered by a Pankaj Udhas show. Akash confronts Aman with this and Aman admits that he loves Pooja. Pooja witnesses this encounter and becomes upset with both Akash and Aman. Akash convinces Pooja and she eventually ends up accepting Aman.

Lalita (Madhuri Dixit) catches the eye of JB (Raj Babbar) and he immediately falls in love with her and decides that he must have her. Le film Kalank se situe en 1945 dans une Inde pré-indépendante, où le monde solennel, élitiste et opulent de la famille Chaudhry, et celui de Hira Mandi, le quartier pauvre, sauvage, mystérieux et musical de la ville, s’affrontent lorsque Roop Chaudhry rencontre Zafar, forgeron casse-cou, bagarreur et coureur de jupons. Roop a contracté un mariage de raison avec Dev Chaudhry à la demande de Satya, sa femme mourante. Zafar est le demi-frère illégitime de Dev, et ne vit que pour se venger de son père qui l’a rejeté et est également responsable de son abandon par sa mère. Roop tombe éperdument amoureuse de Zafar qui, bien que s’étant rapproché d’elle pour servir sa vengeance, finit, sans vouloir l’admettre, par partager ses sentiments. Ils se retrouvent pris sur le champ de bataille de l'amour pendant que toute la ville est à feu et à sang. La question est de savoir si cet amour fou s’éteindra dans le rouge de la violence ou s’épanouira dans celui de l’amour.
