The film depicts the life of one-time wealthy and noble poet Mirza Ghalib. The story revolves around his trials, successes and failures and his ultimate descent into poverty. Ghalib falls in love with a beautiful courtesan named Chaudvin; however, tragedy befalls their ill-fated relationship. Set in a historical background, the film deals with the eternal psychological and social problems in the career of a genius poet. This film portrays one aspect of life of Mirza Ghalib (born 27 December 1797; died 15 February 1869, at age 73) in which the conflict between love and loyalty had deeply affected a sensitive artist. Mirza Ghalib fails to make an impression at the Royal Court 'Mushaira' of Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar but at the same time, unknowingly wins the heart of Chaudvin, an accomplished court dancer.

The plot revolves around rustic life in a small village. Neeli (Miss Kumari), a Dalit peasant girl, falls in love with Sreedharan Nair (Sathyan), a school teacher. Neeli becomes pregnant. Sreedharan Nair refuses to marry Neeli as he fears being ostracized by a conservative society. Neeli becomes an outcaste and dies in child birth. The film was essentially a reproduction of the stage revue with a thin plot added. This involved a producer and performer (Ronny Graham) in financial trouble on opening night. A wealthy Texan, whose daughter is in the show, offers to help out on the condition that he finds the show to be of high-enough quality and commercial potential to warrant the investment. Meanwhile, Graham locks a bill collector in a dressing room until the show is finished and he can collect the money.

The story is set in a kingdom. The chief minister wants his daughter to marry the King's only son, the future prince. The Prince, grows up as the forest chief's adopted son Kannayya (N.T. Rama Rao). Veeranna's daughter is Nana (Anjali Devi). Both of them grows up as thieves. The old King escapes finally and stays at Nana's house. Nana steals the Princess Lalita Devi's (Devika) necklace and Kannayya returns it to her. The princess falls in love with him. Nana also falls for the Kannayya too. He gets to know his true identity, defeats his enemies and gets back his Kingdom.
