Vanna Kanavugal is a 1987 Indian Tamil film directed by Ameerjan and produced by Rajam Balachander and Pushpa Kandaswamy. The film features Karthik, Murali, Jayashree, Charle and Nassar in lead roles. The film, had musical score by V. S. Narasimhan. The film is a remake of Malayalam film Adiyozhukkukal.

Karthik is a schoolteacher in a local town. He is a bachelor living along with his friends, Nassar, Junior Balaiya and Charlie. Karthik has had a troubled love-life, having lost his lover, Suchitra in a car accident. His friends are wastrels who roam about the town, flirting with the local girls. During one such dalliance with an army officer, VK Ramaswamy's daughter, Bhanupriya, they are put behind the bars for a few days. Karthik also gets peeved with their behaviour and reprimands them for their uncouth behaviour.

Balu (Karthik) is a graduate youth, came from his village to town, who want to become rich. He works as a police informer and fall in love with Janaki (Sithara), the daughter of Inspector Veerapandian. Veerapandian asks Balu to watch closely his daughter if she had a boyfriend. In the same time, Veerapandian's ennemy Kumar (Nassar) tries to kidnap her daughter, they fail due to his opposition. Balu finds an illegal drug trade and his house's owner was sent in jail, then his all family commits suicide. Veerapandian is promoted as assistant commissioner and Balu resigns his job. One day, Veerapandian finds Balu in a crime scene and asks him to say who's the killer but he refuses. Even beaten, he says nothing and he cannot find a job. Baby is killed and Balu decides to steal the money from criminals. Balu becomes rich and Kumar falls in love with Balu's sister Parvathi. Balu was later arrested by Veerapandian and Kumar refuses to save him, his sister realises that she has been cheated by Kumar and Kumar kills her. Janaki tells that the culprit is Darmaraj and Veerapandian releases him. Balu kills Kumar and Darmaraj to revenge his sister death.

Thillainathan (Karthik), a young graduate, leaves his village for an interview. He gets the job at the bank, finds a house and falls in love with Jeyakodi. His favourite singer, his favourite poet and his favourite politician all come, one by one, to see his new house. Rathi (Kushboo), a music video director, lives with her husband Ravi (Nassar) and their two kids. However, she is unaware that her husband Ravi is in fact a robber. He carries out smart crimes with his partner Sabesan (Prakash Raj). The police officer Dev (Thalaivasal Vijay) is pressured to arrest them. After a diamond heist which gone wrong, Ravi finally gets caught while Sabesan escapes. Ravi managed to hide the diamonds in his house before being hauled off by the police. During the police custody, Ravi is shot by Dev, injuring him heavily. So Ravi is moved to the hospital and the doctors eventually saves his life. Thereafter, Sabesan goes to his ward and he questions Ravi about the diamonds. Sabesan even killed his partner to leave oneself a way out. Sabesan is now urged to find the diamonds and enters Rathi's household as Ravi's friend. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.
